Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden and Boulder, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy-efficiency technologies. NREL's National Wind Technology Center has an immediate opening for a full time (40 hours per week) Postdoctoral Researcher with broad expertise in fluid mechanics, structural analysis, and energy conversion processes in developing innovative ocean energy technologies with high performance and low cost for application in emerging markets for offshore power generation. The candidate will have a broad background in mechanical and systems engineering with knowledge in ocean engineering. In addition, the candidate should have hands-on experience with finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, and hydrodynamic analysis of floating bodies. The successful candidate will work with a team of scientists and engineers at NREL in cooperation with members of the ocean energy industry funded by the DOE Water Power Program. The team will perform research needed to develop ocean technologies for supplying electrical, mechanical and fluid power for offshore application such as: aquaculture, algae farming, ocean observation systems, desalination production, seawater minerals harvesting, and other emerging offshore power applications.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in engineering, applied mathematics, or equivalent.
  • Experience with MATLAB and LabVIEW programing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in mechanical and fluid systems analysis for one or more offshore applications listed above.
  • Experience with hydrodynamic analysis of floating bodies.
  • Experience in the programming of analysis methods for modeling complex fluid mechanical systems.
  • A demonstrated ability to work in a diverse team across disciplines.
  • Established publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
