Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. NREL is leading several projects on high-fidelity computational modeling of wind turbines and plants. There is an immediate opening in the Computaional Science Center for a post-doctoral researcher in overset methods for wind farm CFD simulations. The post-doctoral researcher will work in a large multi-lab, multi-disciplinary team in developing overset methods for high-fidelity time-domain simulations of wind farms. ?

The post-doctoral researcher will work with senior NREL researchers and a PhD student in developing overset methods for high-fidelity time-domain simulations of wind farms. The researcher will be part of a large multi-lab team that has funding through the DOE Office of Science/NNSA ExaWind Exascale Computing Project and the DOE Wind Energy Technologies Office Atmosphere to electrons project. Primary duties will be in establishing existing overset methods, and developing new methods, where simulations are performed with the open-source Nalu computational fluid dynamics code and the OpenFAST turbine simulation code. ?


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.


Preferred Qualifications

(1) PhD in applied mathematics, aerodynamics, mechanical engineering, or equivalent within the last three years, (2) experience in low-Mach-number and/or incompressible flow solvers, (3) knowledge of numerical methods used in computational fluid dynamics, (3) established publication record in peer-reviewed journals, and (4) expertise in C++.

The preferred candidate will have (1) expertise in overset methods in large-eddy simulations, (2) experience in computational fluid dynamics on next-generation platforms (e.g., GPU, Intel many-core), (3) experience with the Kokkos programming model, (4) experience working with or developing Poisson solvers for CFD applications, (5) knowledge of aerodynamics, especially in the area of wind energy, and (6) expertise in modern software engineering methods.
