Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The National Bioenergy Center at NREL has an opening for a full time Intern in catalyst testing and characterization.

The successful candidate will support multiple projects via catalyst evaluation with a flow reactor system. The intern will perform experiments as requested, maintain equipment calibrations, prepare and analyze raw data sets, and present findings at group meetings.

Required Education and Experience:

Currently pursuing or recently awarded a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science; classroom training (coursework) in catalysis and/or reaction engineering; experience operating 2 or more types of laboratory equipment; experience working with Microsoft Office software tools, especially Excel and PowerPoint.

Additional Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Demonstrated excellence in technical coursework; excellent writing skills; troubleshooting and problem-solving skills; attention to detail; dedication to a safe and clean work environment; ability to work independently or in multi-disciplinary teams and to deliver high-quality results within aggressive timelines; exposure to environmental health and safety and laboratory best practices.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior internships where work was conducted in a laboratory environment; experience with laboratory reactors including furnaces, flow controllers, Swagelok and VCR fittings, glassware, insulation, analytical balances, and control interface; experience with gas chromatography and/or mass spectrometry; experience in collecting and analyzing laboratory data; experience with uncertainty/error analysis; in 3rd or 4th year (or finished with) bachelor’s program.
