Job Description

Seeking two postdocs to work with researchers in NREL’s Transportation Center to investigate the travel and energy impacts of emerging technologies such as automated vehicles (AVs), and new transportation concepts including automated mobility districts (AMDs) and using transportation networking companies (TNCs) or mobility as a service (MaaS) as an alternative to private vehicle ownership. Specific research tasks may include:

  • Develop customized tools (e.g., built off of SUMO or other software packages) and perform modeling to quantify travel and energy impacts of different transportation alternatives under various scenario assumptions.
  • Link detailed travel models of coordinated electrified vehicles and associated electricity consumption and charging needs with other researchers' models of the utility grid; co-develop optimal control strategies for both transportation and grid demand management.
  • Develop statistical and machine learning models to understand the impacts of AVs/AMDs and TNCs/MaaS on transportation networks and travel behavior
  • Perform big data mining, analysis, visualization and interpretation
  • Gather a variety of transportation/travel data through APIs (Google, Uber, Lyft etc.) and/or develop customized web scraping tools to gather the required data
  • Assist in producing high-quality publications, reports and research proposals

Desired Education, Experience and Skills

Strong collaboration skills: thrive working in a collaborative team environment but comfortable working independently when necessary

  • Demonstrated knowledge in one of more of the following software and programming languages: Python, R, C, C++, MATLAB, HTML, CSS, JavaScript
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with big data analytics, machine learning or deep learning, high-performance and/or distributed computing
  • Knowledge of GIS, GPS data analysis and visualization, web design, and/or engineering computing
