Job Description

Develop and apply electrical modeling techniques, such as 3D-electromagnetic parasitic extraction and circuit-level simulations in SPICE, for the design of novel, high-performance, gallium-oxide-based power electronics devices and packaging. Also, assist with developing and applying dicing, bonding and clean-room processing techniques for power electronic device packages as part of an NREL internal R&D project, as well as semiconductor device modeling efforts. This position will support research and development conducted in-house by NREL researchers.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.


Preferred Qualifications

Job duties include electrical co-design to ensure that the intrinsic gallium oxide device capabilities are fully utilized at the circuit level. Starting with a set of design objectives (current rating, switching frequency, operating voltage), 3D-electromagnetic parasitic extraction (e.g., using ANSYS Q3D, FastHenry/FastCap) and circuit-level simulations (e.g., using SPICE) will be used to verify device performance under real-world operating conditions.

The job duties also include contributing to the development of gallium oxide thermal test devices (dies) that mimic the thermal performance of future gallium oxide power transistors.

Candidate is expected to document work/results in reports, presentations, conferences, archival journal papers, as well as interact with NREL partners in industry, academia, and national laboratories.

Recent Ph.D. graduate in Electrical Engineering or Materials Science with 3.0 GPA or higher. Must have knowledge and experience in electrical modeling and design tools. Demonstrated publication history in peer-reviewed journals.

Some experience and knowledge of mechanics/strength of materials would be useful.

Background in experimental materials processing, as well as working knowledge of device preparation techniques would be a plus. Proficiency in semiconductor device modeling tools (e.g., Silvaco Atlas) would be useful. Expertise and background in electrical modeling, design, fabrication, and demonstration of power electronics for electric-drive vehicle and other energy efficiency and renewable energy applications would be preferred.

Demonstration of research capability and initiative to solve challenging problems. Good interpersonal, communication, writing and documentation skills. Creativity, innovation, adaptability, as well as the ability of work well in a team.
