Job Description

Job Summary

The National Wind Technology Center is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to help execute projects related to wind turbine or marine hydrokinetic drivetrain technology. The researcher will perform drivetrain model-to-test validation studies for traditional and innovative drivetrain concepts. Parametric design tradeoff studies that have the potential to increase drivetrain performance, efficiency, and/or reliability will be conducted. The researcher will use a variety of commercially-available drivetrain simulation tools and data analysis software, in addition to aeroelastic codes for the entire structural system. The researcher may participate in development of optimization methodologies for wind plant operations & maintenance. The researcher will also participate in full-scale drivetrain test campaigns conducted in wind turbines or dynamometers at the National Wind Technology Center. The researcher will work with a wide variety of customers including the DOE wind energy technology office. They will also work collaboratively with other national laboratories, industry and the international community.

The successful candidate will collaborate with other NREL staff and industrial partners in drivetrain design analysis, drivetrain testing, drivetrain model-to-test comparisons and reliability engineering. The successful candidate will have excellent writing, presentation, interpersonal and communication skills. The candidate will be expected to help publish results in technical journals/conference proceedings and present work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings. They will also be expected to support the development of new work proposals, preparations, and reviews.

Required Education and Experience

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have experience with drivetrain design and modeling, gear and bearing specification and reliability analysis, and drivetrain testing. The preferred candidate will have experience with drivetrain modeling tools such as SIMPACK, SAMCEF, Calyx/Transmission 3D, and RomaxWind; finite element or solid body modeling tools such as ANSYS or SolidWorks; tribological modeling and fracture mechanics; acquiring, reducing and analyzing large experimental data sets using tools such as LabVIEW and MATLAB; and wind turbine aeroelastic modeling tools such as FAST/OpenFAST. Lastly, candidates with aerospace and mechanical design backgrounds with some knowledge of wind engineering or marine hydrokinetic applications, reliability engineering, reliability-centered design, and probabilistic analysis experience are encouraged to apply.
