Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The NREL Hydrogen & Fuel Cells Engineering Group conducts applied research in hydrogen technologies to enable the deployment of hydrogen infrastructure. A postdoctoral position is available in the Hydrogen & Fuel Cells Engineering Group in the area of safety sensing technology. Safety sensing technology is used in a variety of hydrogen infrastructure applications including storage, vehicle dispensing, production, and transfer of hydrogen.

The qualified candidate will perform and direct research at the NREL Safety Sensor Laboratory by incorporating input from key partners to identify high priority research needs and optimal solutions to address these needs. The qualified candidate will possess technical expertise that includes the following:

-knowledge of sensing technologies to detect flammable gases in a range of operating environments

-knowledge of experimental design, including electric circuits, and construction of unique laboratory experimental equipment

-knowledge of gas and liquid behavior including gas dispersion and thermodynamics

-knowledge of data analysis techniques

-knowledge of programming data collection and analysis systems

-knowledge of data representation software to clearly convey laboratory results to potential users

Duties may include:

-Support fuel cell and/or hydrogen infrastructure research in areas such as technology validation, hydrogen refuel systems, code and standard data evaluation, compressors, and other related hardware utilizing NREL’s Energy Systems Integration Facility and Distributed Energy Resources Test Facility

-Develop and execute test plans, applying, when-appropriate, ANOVA and Design of Experiments principles.

-Analyze test data using MATLAB, Minitab, or other appropriate software.

-Write quality scientific articles for peer-reviewed journals based on test data that are consistent with, and support, project goals.

-Identify and investigate areas of fundamental science that are un-explored, or under explored, with the realm of cryogenic hydrogen, dontainant detection, and water electrolysis

-Expertise in electrochemistry, and/or hydrogen liquefaction

-Follow all ES&H policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
