Job Description

As a member of the Transportation and Hydrogen Systems Center, integrate the operation of electric vehicles with building and grid operations through collaboration with academic and industry partners creating value and opportunity. The initial appointment is for one year, with possible renewal for up to a total of three years. The successful candidate will join team members on a multi-year cutting-edge laboratory, analytical, and field project to research, develop, evaluate and integrate energy management algorithms, devices, and systems that deliver cost-effective energy savings in residential buildings and neighborhoods. The research includes systems integration planning, strategic model development, laboratory research plan execution, and presentation of complex system conclusions. Dissemination of the research results will be shared with industry, technical, and Department of Energy audiences.

Under the general direction of senior staff, the successful candidate will:

  • Engage in laboratory, analytical and field evaluations of electric vehicle and grid integration systems;
  • Develop vehicle grid integration projects necessary to develop data and knowledge of challenges facing grid integration applications;
  • Collaborate with a cross-disciplinary team of engineers to conducted research experiments to integrate transportation systems which interface with facility and grid systems to enhance the value of electric vehicles.
  • Analyze results: Use internal and external data resources to develop opportunity scenarios for vehicle grid integration technology. Research should both highlight value and challenges remaining to be addressed. Highlight research direction needed and propose new and insightful applications of these evolving technologies;
  • Disseminate information: Identify opportunities for sharing the results of the technology development and testing with key stakeholders. Author technical papers, conference papers, and journal articles on research results. Support in the development of future work plans based on conclusions. Leverage NREL publication resources to share data and results with industry. Present results at relevant conferences or workshops.

Candidate must have strong academic record and relevant education in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or relevant dissertation research in other engineering or science field. Strong interpersonal communication skills required(oral and written).

Candidate shall have demonstrated experience in:
• Understanding of electric vehicle components including high voltage battery systems, inverters, and chargers;
• design, execution, and analysis of laboratory or field experiments;
• transportation systems, energy engineering or systems engineering;
• research in; and/or
• practical electronics knowledge (both controls and power electronics) and interest or expertise in electromagnetics, fields, and inductive charging technologies.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook). Experience in conducting complex engineering in research projects. Initiates innovative research in areas supporting cross-disciplinary projects resulting in relevant publications. Solid engineering and technical capabilities in electrical engineering, experimental design, data acquisition, data analysis. Experience using Matlab and Simulink for the analysis of data and development of systems simulations.

Preferred candidate will be familiar with:

  • Development of simulation algorithms and tools and conducting analysis of large data sets.
  • Research laboratory working knowledge and experience with vehicle testing.
  • Hardware testing and/or prototype system development.
  • Laboratory testing knowledge using digital oscilloscope, multi-meter, and programmable loads.
  • Electric vehicle-related interface and communications standards CAN, LIN, SAE J1772, J2836, J2847, CHAdeMO.
  • Projects using smart grid controls interface systems including, HomePlug GreenPhy, SEP2.0, ModBus, Open Charge Point Protocol, OpenADR, and Cloud services. Previous experience with Java, C/C++, Python, or other embedded device programming languages.
  • Utility operations and related standards including UL 1741, IEEE 1547, J2894, and IEC 61850 and 61851 are valuable.
  • Research on inductive charging systems for electric vehicles and knowledge of SAE J2954 and ICNIRP standards.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
