Job Description

Temporary NDItech Software Development Project Assistant

The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) is looking for a Project Assistant with a passion for global political systems and technology to join the NDItech team. This is a temporary Project Assistant position, based in NDI's Washington, DC office.

NDItech works around the globe with political experts in NDI's 60+ field offices to design and support technology-enabled programs giving citizens more voice in their governments and aiding governments in being more responsive to their people. The NDItech team works to improve democratic institutions like political parties, civil society organizations, and legislatures by applying locally-appropriate technology to increase transparency, open new channels of dialogue, and empower activist organizing and advocacy.

Project Assistants at NDI are given substantive responsibilities and are expected to be professional contributors to the wide-ranging efforts of this small team. Project Assistants need to be disciplined self-starters who can accept assignments and run with them, occasionally under pressure; they also need to know when to seek guidance before proceeding. Project Assistants are encouraged to attend workshops, lectures and other events at NDI and across DC.

Responsibilities:

* Contribute to reporting on trends and innovations in technology and democracy
* Assist in writing easy-to-understand instructions and manuals for technology tools
* Assist in designing and managing software quality assurance test plans
* Assist with software release cycles
* Assist the team with communications plan around software releases
* Assist with management of software code repositories
* Assist with digital security evaluations of software and programs
* Assist with contract management and relationships with software development vendors;
* Investigate new technologies relevant to civil society, document their use and identify applications relevant for NDI programs
* Assist with research requests, including technology profiles of targeted countries
* Attend external events as a NDItech representative; take notes and report
* Monitor technology media, including Twitter, and prepare summary clips
* Contribute to the NDItech blog (https://nditech.org)
* Contribute to the @NDItech Twitter and Tech4Dem Facebook accounts
* Assist with administrative tasks such as travel authorizations and reconciliations

Required Qualifications:

* Passion for learning about new technologies demonstrated through experience experimenting with new tools or software
* Analytical/problem solving skills
* Excellent writing and speaking skills in both formal and informal (blogging, social media) styles
* Ability to prioritize between multiple projects and complete them in a timely fashion - and follow up on conflicting deadlines and priorities

Preferred Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree with coursework in political science, international studies and/or computer science or a combination of education and experience in lieu of degree can be considered
* Experience working in Linux operating systems
* Experience with basic web development technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript
* Experience programming with web scripting languages such as Python, PHP, Ruby on Rails or ASP.net
* Familiarity with web hosting technologies such as Apache, NGINX, MySQL, Postgres, Docker, etc.
* Experience working in an Agile project management environment
* Experience with GitHub or other code management systems
* Experience with graphic design or data visualization tools
* Experience with Quality Assurance/Software Testing
* Familiarity with UI/UX design
* Excellent organizational skills
* Political, campaign, legislative, organization or NGO experience
* Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.) strongly desired
* Fluency in a language other than English and/or international work experience
