Help Duties Summary

This position is in the NASA's Pathways Intern Program which provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful work experience.

These positions are student trainee engineering positions under Scientific, Technical, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) occupations in various organizations including Operations Engineering, Mission Information and Test Systems, and Research and Engineering at the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC).

Responsibilities

You may be required to perform rotational assignments to various organizations. Additionally, these positions require you to work a specific schedule such as rotating semesters between school and NASA. You may be required to work additional rotations depending on degree completion date.

You will work under the mentorship of an engineering professional in specialties such as Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electronics Engineering.

You will assist engineering professionals in non-routine and progressively responsible duties.

* Enrolled/accepted in an ABET accredited educational institution
* Pursuing a degree
* Maintain enrollment at least half time as defined by the institution
* Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.9 on a 4.0 scale

You will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.

You will be required to undergo a pre-employment background investigation.

To be eligible for a position in the Pathways Program, you must meet ALL of the following requirements:

* Be at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment.
* Meet the definition of student in 5 CFR 362.202 which defines a student as an individual accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled), including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93-842.
* Have and maintain a cumulative 2.9 Grade Point Average (GPA) or higher on a 4.00 scale. (For the purpose of eligibility the cumulative GPA will be used and will be truncated. In no case will the GPA be rounded.)
* Be able to complete at least 640 hours of work prior to completing degree requirements.
* Students currently in an undergraduate degree program, degree completion date MUST be December 2020 or later to be eligible.
* Students currently in a graduate degree program, degree completion date MUST be May 2020 or later to be eligible.

Qualifications

Positions will be filled at the GS-4, GS-5, GS-6, GS-7 or GS-9 level only.

Candidates must meet the following education requirements to qualify:

GS-4: Enrolled in a certificate program, associate's or bachelor's degree program and have completed at least 30 semester hours or at least 45 quarter hours of undergraduate education.

GS-5: Enrolled in a certificate program or bachelor's degree program and have completed at least 60 semester hours or at least 90 quarter hours of undergraduate education.

GS-6: Enrolled in a certificate program or a bachelor's degree program and have completed 90 or more semester hours or 135 or more quarter hours of undergraduate education.

GS-7: Accepted into a master's or juris doctor program OR in the first year of a master's or juris doctor program.

GS-9: Complete 1 academic year of a master's or juris doctor program.

Education

You must be pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science at an institution accredited by the Department of Education. Degrees in engineering technology are NOT qualifying for this position.

Engineering degrees must be from a college or university with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. To find out if a degree meets this requirement, go to http://www.abet.org.

About National Aeronautics and Space Administration

The NASA Innovative Lunar Demonstrations Data (ILDD) contracts provide for issuance of delivery orders that will specify data associated with system testing and integration, launch, in-space maneuvers, braking burns, lunar landing and other enhanced capabilities. Knowledge acquired from this data will be applied to the development of lander systems necessary to execute human and robotic missions to the moon, near-Earth asteroids or other solar system destinations. They will contribute to NASA's efforts to enable affordable and sustainable space exploration.
