Applications Engineer – ASSG


Primary Objective:
Generate sales worldwide of custom products to achieve volume and profitability growth objectives. Create MTS value by leading the translation of customer requirements into a proposed technical solution. Serve as the technical expert/resource on customer applications within area(s) of specialization, enhancing MTS’ technical credibility.


Major Areas of Accountability:

Responsible for prospecting and closing orders within assigned specialization area(s) to meet annual plan.

  • Uses knowledge of assigned area(s) to identify potential new customers (prospects).
  • Visits prospects to drive pipeline and order growth
  • Develops strategies to win opportunities.
  • Update and maintain Opportunity Records within SaleForce Data base on a regular basis.

    Follows the guidelines defined in the MTS Pursuit Cycle selling process.

Works with MTS Compliance and Legal departments to perform the appropriate reviews to determine customer status and ability of MTS to deliver a proposal to interested customer.

Gathers information to thoroughly understand the customer’s technical requirements, specifications and needs.  Establishes technical credibility with the prospective customer.

  • Defines customer’s technical problems.
  • Converts customer’s desired solutions into specifications and requirements.
  • Evaluates technical content and provides recommendations regarding cost and risk of pursuit.

Prepares the Opportunity Summary Statement and works with the PERT (Pre-Estimation Resource Team) to assign required resources. 

Creates proposed solutions demonstrating MTS’ value to the customer.

  • Document and communicate customer specifications to engineering and project management as required.
  • Ensure concept design, feasibility assessments, cost estimates, and other elements of the solution are well-understood and completed in a timely manner and to MTS’ processes.
  • Conducts risk analysis, risk mitigation plan and communicates appropriately
  • Plan and conduct demonstrations, prototypes, reference cases, etc. to help MTS and the prospective customer understand the solution as it is being developed. 
  • May supply value-added external solution, where appropriate.
  • Creates content for the proposal leveraging internal resources.
  • Develops and Prepares the final quotation that is delivered to the customer.
  • Recommends pricing and sales strategy based on market knowledge.

Prepares and Conducts MTS defined Price Review Process by discussing cost and margin objectives to the MTS Executive Team in accordance with price threshold guidelines.   

Leads contract negotiations and re-negotiations as required.

  • Guides customer through the technical solution, if needed.
  • Adjusts cost and/or risk assessment during the course of negotiations.
  • Manages technical changes following pre-established guidelines.
  • Uses market knowledge to provide input on pricing.

Participate in design reviews with the customer to finalize all details.  Responsible for a clean hand-off on new projects to Operations. 

Serves as a technical resource in areas of specialization, and develops market leader image internal / external to MTS.  Gathers customer intelligence and provides feedback and competitive information on market strategies. Participates in professional societies and society committees to stay informed of latest testing trends, to build MTS industry knowledge and to influence testing standards.

  • BS degree in engineering/technical discipline or equivalent work experience. 
  • 5 years of progressively demanding technical experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to type efficiently for proposal preparation.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of personal discipline
  • Willingness to travel a 25-35 percent or more domestic or internationally depending upon the specific customer location
  • Technical aptitude and decision-making
  • Selling and business acumen
