Job Description

General Statement

University Services provides responsible leadership and systematic guidance to preserve and advance a safe and effective physical environment in support of education, research and community needs. University Services is comprised of the four service management areas of Engineering and Utilities; Facilities Services; Campus Planning, Design and Construction; and Safety and Risk Management, as well as the Business Management and Administrative areas necessary to support the operation. The Stationary Engineer falls under the Engineering and Utilities area.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Central Heat Plant Operations, Maintenance and Repair
    Safe and energy-efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of steam boilers, turbine generators, associated equipment, and emergency systems in central plant to provide a reliable steam supply to meet campus demands, and to generate a portion of campus electricity needs. Performs testing and chemical treatment of water; operation of chemical feed equipment; instrument checks and maintenance of operation logs and recorders; boiler status and peripheral equipment (pumps, fans, economizers, pneumatic/electric/electronic control systems, deaerators, compressors, etc.) checks and adjustments; operation of emergency diesel generator and LPG fuel systems; monitoring of emergency fuel reserves; monitoring of natural gas consumption and initiating of demand peak-shaving; monitoring and calibration of air quality compliance system; combustion efficiency tests; manual and janitorial tasks; set up of combustion control motors; troubleshooting and repair of controls; set up of boiler combustion efficiency
  • Small Heating Plant and Steam Distribution Operation, Maintenance, & Repair
    Safely, reliably, and efficiently operate, maintain, and repair approximately 54 outlying heating plants across campus. Performs testing and chemical treatment of water; operation of chemical feed equipment; instrument checks and maintenance of operation logs and recorders; boiler status and peripheral equipment (pumps, fans, economizers, pneumatic/electric/electronic control systems, deaerators, compressors, etc.)
    Medium pressure steam distribution from the central plant routes through an extensive tunnel system with limited direct bury piping. Maintain and repair this system including, but not limited to, expansion joints, valves, steam traps, condensate skids, control devices up to, and including, main pressure regulating valves at building connection.
  • Utility Meter Reading
    Read utility metering systems.
  • Other Duties as Assigned
    May assist other personnel or perform maintenance, calibration, etc. work on various campus systems and equipment depending on shift and plant operations schedules. Performs related work as directed. Establish and maintain effective working relations within work unit, with other Facilities and campus personnel.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. First Class Montana Boiler Operator’s License.
  2. Experience with operation and maintenance of steam boiler systems including chemical treatment programs, emergency diesel-powered generators and emergency fuel systems.
  3. Knowledge of the operation of steam turbine generator systems.
  4. Demonstrated working knowledge of work safety procedures, such as lockout/tagout and chemical safety.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Experience with electronic combustion controls, emissions monitoring, and air quality compliance.
  2. Experience working in a University or institutional environment.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

Shift: The plant operates 24 hours/day, 7 days/week and uses a modified DuPont 12 hour shift. Work is also performed on an overtime basis.

Must possess a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. Please do not send a copy of the driver’s license at this time. (If successful candidate possess a valid out-of-state driver’s license, must obtain a valid Montana driver’s license within 60 days of hire.)

Physical Demands
  • Performing physical tasks associated with the operation of steam boilers and plant equipment, including valve operations, moving and transporting materials (package weights to 50# is common)
  • Working under temperature extremes, especially heat
  • Working from and negotiating elevated catwalks, stairs, ladders, manholes and crawlspaces
  • Working with and around moving equipment such as motors, pumps, fans, turbine-generators, and emergency diesel and liquefied-propane-gas systems
  • Expose to and handling of water treatment chemicals and reagents.
