Job Description

Moffatt & Nichol is actively searching for a civil or coastal engineer who specializes in coastal projects. This is a general civil/coastal engineering and production position. The primary role is to work on a variety of projects - including large and small coastal projects across the state, throughout the US, and potentially outside the US. This position will be a part of meeting various civil and coastal engineering job requirements and will be given opportunities as a client-facing team member, as appropriate.

Duties and responsibilities:

* Perform preliminary engineering design tasks for coastal and waterfront projects
* Prepare plans, specifications, cost estimates, in support of final bid packages
* Prepare sea level rise/climate change vulnerability assessments and adaptation planning
* Ability to establish effective working relationships with team members and project managers
* Draft design plans, including but not limited to implementation and knowledge of cross sections, traffic control, drainage, quantity calculations, and signing and pavement markings plans
* Participate in design activities and meetings between design staff, subcontractors, and client managers
* Participate in project decisions regarding technical approaches, feasibility, cost, construction approaches, and scheduling performance
* Participate in identifying schedule and cost variances, and developing and implementing recommendations for corrective action
* Prepares written and graphic reports and makes presentations
* Prepares various draft documents under direction, including reports, memoranda, and poster
* Requires occasional travel to local clients

Qualifications:

* 1-4 years' engineering experience possessing a broad knowledge of coastal and waterfront infrastructure projects, permitting, and a wide range of civil engineering project production.
* Bachelor's degree in Civil or Coastal Engineering (or other closely related discipline) required; Master's degree preferred
* EIT preferred
* Strong technical report writing skills required
* Familiarity with standard coastal numerical models for waves, hydrodynamics and sediment transport processes
* Experience in water resources, hydraulics and hydrology would be a plus
* MicroStation, Autocad and Civil 3D design software experience required
* GIS experience required
* Data management and program skills such as Matlab desired
* Familiarity with project management such as schedule management and financial project management desired
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills required

Our Southern California offices work collaboratively on projects. Staff may sit in anyone of our growing regional offices. The general environment is an office role with occasional extended hours or weekend work to meet client deliverables may be required. Travel is not required, but some projects may require travel to support field work and job site visits.
