Minnkota also owns and operates a second wind turbine located on a ridge three miles east of Petersburg, North Dakota. This turbine became operational on July 12, 2002. Under a Senate Appropriations Bill, eight U.S. military installations are required to purchase a percentage of wind-generated energy for five years beginning in 2002. This includes both of North Dakota's U.S. Air Force Bases in Minot and Grand Forks. Electricity generated from the Petersburg turbine is being sold to the Grand Forks Air Force Base through the base's retail power supplier, Nodak Electric Cooperative of Grand ...
