FTE: 15 Hours/week; this is based on full-time equivalency with 1.0 being full time

Girls in Engineering, Mathematics, and Science (GEMS / Little GEMS) and Guys in Science and Engineering (GISE / Jr. GISE) are after-school and summer programs designed specifically for K-8th grade girls and boys (respectively) in the Minneapolis Public School District. The goal of these programs is for students to have measurable and significant gains in mathematics and science. The GEMS and GISE programs are award-winning science programs that energize our students' excitement about the possibilities in cutting-edge science. We value the talent and innovation the programs developers and teachers bring to the Minneapolis Public Schools.


  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Individuals with strong interest and/or experience in science, technology, engineering, and/or math preferred.
  • Comfortable working with a diverse student population
  • Comfortable with role as academic coach and under the direction of the classroom teacher
  • Enjoy working with middle and high school students
  • Ability to build positive relationships around academics with students in grades 6-12
  • Ability to motivate and encourage students to reach post-secondary educational goal


  • MPS hourly employees will earn their hourly rate
  • Teachers
    • Minneapolis Public School licensed teacher paid at hourly direct instruction (DI) rate
    • Non-MPS licensed teacher $25/hr
    • Retired MPS licensed teacher $25/hr


The GEMS coaching positions begin in September and continue through April 24th. (Fall-Robotics/Spring-Aerospace/Rocketry). Coaches facilitate students in the following: (1)Designing, building and programming (2) Applying real-world math, science, technology, and engineering concepts; (3)Researching challenges facing today’s scientists; (4) Learning critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills; (5) Engaging in STEM Exhibitions and Tournaments.

About Minneapolis Public Schools

Since 1994, the Minneapolis Public Schools has operated under site-based decision making to move decision making closest to the students served. The goal of site-based management is to improve student achievement. Under site-based decision making, district and school efforts, theoretically, should complement each other. District offices set parameters, facilitate the sharing of information and best practices among schools, help evaluate progress, and give constructive feedback to both the schools and the Board. Schools have freedom (within approved decision-making parameters) to design site plans. Although what site-based decision making looks like at each school may vary, schools typically have a team of representatives from all areas to serve as a "site council," "education council" or "shared leadership team." This will include principals, parents, students, teachers, specialist teachers, clerical, other building staff, business partners, and the community/neighborhood. The councils meet monthly to make decisions and discuss long-range program goals for the school. Parents who are not on the council may attend and if they would like to have a subject discussed, may submit agenda items and talk to a member. Under the site-based decision making philosophy, these councils are to examine everything that might be standing in the way of student achievement-be it grade levels, student groupings, materials, or school policies and practice-and recommend keeping what is working and changing what is not.
