ENTOMOLOGIST


SALARY:
$55,057.60 - $79,601.16 Annually

DESCRIPTION:
The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District, a multi-county public agency, currently intends to fill a regular, full-time professional/technical level position of Entomologist. This position is responsible for designing and conducting mosquito and black fly surveillance, prompt reporting of accurate surveillance results to the organization to guide control efforts, and hiring and supervising full-time and seasonal lab staff. The position reports to the Technical Services Coordinator.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Performs accurate and timely species identification of mosquitoes, and aquatic non-target organisms.
Hires and supervises seasonal staff of 6-8 inspectors and two full time staff to include prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations, ensuring staff are trained and ensuring that employees follow all district policies and procedures and recommends appropriate disciplinary action when required.
Manages entomological data & generates weekly and yearly reports of surveillance results.
Acquires, prepares, distributes, and maintain all surveillance equipment.
Develops and manages surveillance techniques & procedures.
Determines best training methods for seasonal lab employees.
Communicates surveillance results to staff (management, field, & public relations).
Oversees that quality of inspector's work meets set standards.
Coordinates identifications of mosquitoes & black flies.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Entomology (taxonomy) or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Experience in supervision and coaching for optimum work performance within the department.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
. Use of dichotomous keys
. Mosquito/Black Fly and aquatic insect (for non-target) biology & taxonomy
. Insect surveillance & equipment knowledge
. Microscope use
. Design of laboratory QA procedures

SKILLS REQUIRED:
. Using a computer and applicable software applications
. Using standard office equipment, i.e. copiers
. Microscope use
. Maintaining records and preparing reports
. Prioritizing and assigning work direction
. Leading staff
. Communicating, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
. Training others in laboratory work
. Reading and understanding maps/plans

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Physical Requirements
Positions in this class typically require fingering, grasping, reaching, standing walking, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to manipulate, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Position also includes occasional outdoor field work, and requires incumbent to hold a validate drivers license.
