The Associate Vice President, Research & Development Sourcing and Procurement leads the global team responsible to provide Sourcing & Supplier Management support to the entire Merck Research Labs (MRL) division. The incumbent has the responsibility for building high quality Sourcing & Procurement performance and organizational capability as part of Merck's Global R&D Sourcing Strategy. The leader will lead a global team in the development of Sourcing strategies to support the MRL goals and objectives that enable Merck's Mission (To discover, develop and provide innovative products and services that save and improve lives around the world) while bringing negotiation, contracting, supplier management and market intelligence expertise. Incumbent will develop and maintain strong relationships with key MRL executive stakeholders and formulate strong partnership with appropriate MRL business groups. The role will serve as a member of the Supplier Management Leadership Team (SMLT) and as an extended member of appropriate senior stakeholder leadership teams. Additionally, this role will be responsible to ensure category alignment with regional and local procurement colleagues from various locations around the world. Relationship building with Finance colleagues will be key aspect of effective job performance, strategy alignment and business enablement.

Primary Activities include, but are not limited to:

* Leadership - Works strategically and in collaboration with other functions to continuously improve Merck's effectiveness and efficiency of External Partners globally. This includes managing all aspects of performance (Quality, Service, Cost and Innovation) at external sites across the globe and with colleagues within MRL.
* Sourcing & Procurement Leadership - Provide the leadership, strategy and policy oversight for the function and establish a high performance engagement model with the business and regions. As a key leader of a category of spend (~$3.5B), responsible to develop then implement sourcing strategy and ensure Supply Strategy Council alignment, compliance and delivery of required business performance. Responsible for the strategy, leadership, management and budgetary controls of a multi-cultural team of Global Sourcing professionals.
* Organizational Development - Build a core team of high quality Sourcing professionals who have direct responsibility for sourcing strategy and procurement projects. Responsibility includes effective talent management, building proactive recruitment bench & succession planning as key deliverables.
* Change Management - Adopt high quality change practices with colleagues and stakeholders, building and implementing an organizational culture which is customer focused/service mindset, results driven with enterprise focus and sustainable. Be a personal exemplar of the Merck Leadership Standards.
* Performance - Deliver ongoing value-creation productivity targets as required. Meet critical business requirements for AQSCI. Establishes, through a risk based analysis, "calibrated" oversight based - on the product type as well as the capabilities and quality performance - of external suppliers and partners. Establishes clear expectations, measures with periodic monitoring of operational and quality performance associated with suppliers. Establishes periodic Quality performance review meetings with external partners in collaboration with Supplier Development & Performance Management group and MRL colleagues.
* Relationships - Build outstanding relationships with stakeholder management and regional procurement colleagues - which are oriented to meeting Merck's business needs.
* Process - Realize sourcing management, supplier value management, risk management, supplier diversity and SAP, as core sustainable processes and enablers of delivery. Enables New Product Launch support across MRL, GSTC and other areas.
* Global - Ensure that the approach adopted is aligned with and supports Merck Global Sourcing & Procurement strategy and matrix organization structure and ways of working. Serves as a leader and exemplar of Sourcing Management and Supplier Management
* Diversity - Actively support diversity, both within Merck as well as expanding relationships and spend through Economic Inclusion & Supplier Diversity processes.
* Reviews all audit outcomes pertaining to organization of responsibility and appropriate supplier enterprises. Ensures appropriate and timely corrective actions, where warranted.

Qualifications

Required: Undergraduate degree. 10-15 years procurement / business management experience. "Demonstrated executive presence", as well as strong communication skills and ability to drive change in an environment of ambiguity. Technical - Broad base of core Pharma, R&D, Clinical, Direct & Indirect Procurement category knowledge, required.

Preferred: MBA or other relevant graduate degree, highly preferred.

A continuous improvement mindset, and bias to action is important for this role.
