The Department of ChemicalCapabilities and Screening within Merck Research Laboratories located in Rahway,NJ, is seeking an undergraduate summer intern. The intern will function as afully-integrated member of a biocatalysis team, consisting of synthetic andanalytical chemists, molecular biologists, engineers and bioinformaticians.

The job will focus on developing novelenzymatic reactions to synthesis of chiral interediates. TheDepartment of Chemical Capabilities and Structure in Merck Research Laboratorieslocated in Rahway, NJ, is seeking undergraduate summer interns. The intern will function as afully-integrated member of a biocatalysis chemistry team.

The intern will:

* Beinvolved in the discovery and development of novel biocatalytic reactions andtheir application to synthetic routes of potential drug candidates
* Applynovel screening methods utilizing cutting edge automation and high throughputexperimentation, preparative-scale chromatography, and analytical research
* Researchusing techniques in biocatalysis to understand and solve key syntheticchallenges of potential drug candidates
* Attenddepartmental and team meetings to provide a wider perspective on the drugdevelopment process in the pharmaceutical industry
* Provideaccurate electronic notebook recording, reaction set-up techniques, use ofvacuum evaporation devices, thin-layer chromatography, flash chromatography,basic workup procedures, basic NMR interpretation, basic MS interpretation,and safe lab practices
* Havethe opportunity to gain further knowledge and skill sets via refinement ofbiocatalytic and organic chemistry skills, introduction to new spectroscopicand purification techniques, exposure to problems in discovery and processresearch, and perspective on the practical aspects of drug development

The successful candidate will have achance to interact with cross-functional teams of chemists, biologist andengineers to carry high throuput screening of enzyme libraries for selectedbiotransformations. The intern willhave a chance to scale up successful reactionsn to further isolate andcharacterize the prodicts. The intern will be responsible for accurateelectronic notebook recording, safe laboratory practices, and presentation ofdata and their interpretation to a team of scientists. The intern will alsoattend departmental and team meetings to gain a wider perspective on the drugdevelopment process in the pharmaceutical industry.

We are seeking intern candidateswith strong academic performance, communication skills, teamwork, and theability to work in a cross-functional environment.

Location: Rahway, NJ

This is a full-time paid internshipwhereby a weekly stipend will be provided to the student. Housing subsidy isnot available as part of this program, and if housing is required by student,it must be funded 100% by the student. Relocation expenses will be reimbursedfor students currently living >50 miles away from their work location.

Qualifications

Education:

* Candidates must be currently pursuing a BA/BS degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Chemical Biology
* Candidates must have completed a minimum of (2)years of studies towards a BA/BS degree as of June 2018
* Candidates mustbe currently enrolled in an academic program at the time of the application andbe returning to school for at least 1 semester once internship completes

Required Experience:

* Candidates must be available for full-time employment for 11-12 weeks during the months of June - August 2018

Preferred Experience:

* Significant interestin organic synthesis/biocatalysis/biotechnology
* Basiclaboratory skills and research experience, such as: electronic notebookrecording, reaction set-up techniques, use of vacuum evaporation devices,purification techniques such as thin-layer chromatography, flashchromatography, HPLC, recrystallization, and distillation, basic workupprocedures, basic NMR interpretation, basic MS interpretation, and safe labpractices


* Experience with working with enzymes and/or proteins will be a plus but not necessary


* Minimum GPA of 3.0
