Job Description

This position has a high degree of skill and knowledge required in the operation and maintenance of equipment and facility operations. Duties include, but are not limited to operating a variety of heavy equipment and trucks to perform a variety of cutting, filling, compacting, leveling, hauling and other construction and maintenance operations. Processing, transporting and disposing of waste and other materials. Performing maintenance and makes minor repairs on equipment. Performing site and grounds maintenance. Four (4) years of heavy equipment operation, including two (2) years maintenance worker experienced desired. Possess and maintain a valid California Class B Driver's license or obtain within first six months of employment. Designated safety sensitive position.

Examples of Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Skillfully operates a variety of heavy equipment and trucks to perform a variety of cutting, filling, compacting, leveling, hauling and other construction and maintenance operations.
  • Processes, transports and disposes of waste and other materials.
  • Performs maintenance and makes minor repairs on equipment.
  • Keeps time and equipment records.
  • Screens incoming loads for hazardous materials.
  • Process ABOP, e-waste and HHW Materials.
  • May perform the duties of a Scale House Clerk in scale-house operation and handle cash and credit transactions through a computerized system.
  • Performs site and grounds maintenance.
  • May be assigned to provide project and/or lead supervision.
  • May direct solid waste operations in the absence of the Site Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Four (4) years of heavy equipment operation, including two (2) years performing duties comparable to those of a Maintenance Worker.

License:
Possess and maintain a valid California Class B Driver's license. A Class C license may be substituted during the first six months of employment; however a Class B license must be obtained within the six month period. Failure to obtain the proper license will result in termination.

Identified safety sensitive positions in this classification will be subject to pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing pursuant to the provisions of the authority’s drug and alcohol testing policy.

 
Essential Functions:

  • Frequent use of depth perception, peripheral vision and color perception.
  • Frequent repetitive hand and arm motion.
  • Lift and move with help objects weighing over 100 pounds.
  • Wear a respirator or safety glasses or other protective clothing and equipment.
  • Sit and/or stand and/or walk for extended periods.
  • Frequently lift, carry, reach, push, pull, twist and manipulate large and small objects.
  • Occasionally kneel, bend, twist, squat, climb, balance and crawl.
  • Occasionally climb equipment up to 14 feet in height.
  • Frequently work around dust, dirt, refuse, strong odors and noise.

Knowledge of:

  • Operation and maintenance of a variety of medium and heavy road maintenance, construction and earth moving equipment.
  • Provisions of the California Vehicle Code relating to the operation of medium and heavy equipment on streets and roads.
  • Safe work practices.

Ability to:

  • Skillfully and safely operate a variety of medium and heavy road maintenance, construction and earth moving equipment.
  • Using heavy equipment, to cut, fill, and level areas at solid waste facilities.
  • Maintain and make minor repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Keep accurate records.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Identify hazardous waste and techniques to handle products.
