A Life-Changing Career

Position Summary: Mayo Clinic offers unpaid internships for undergraduate students receiving academic credit in exercise science, health and wellness promotion, and related fields. Interns gain experience at the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center (DAHLC) on the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

The center encompasses more than 115,000 square feet and incorporates state-of-the-art equipment, programs and services. DAHLC serves all Mayo Clinic employees, students, volunteers, retirees, spouses and same-gender domestic partners. Self-motivated and creative students should apply.

Responsibilities: Track 1: Health and Wellness Coach Intern
The Health and Wellness Coach Internship at Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center is aimed at providing you with a comprehensive hands-on practical and technical learning experience in the development, implementation, and evaluation of all levels of health and wellness programs and services.

Interns will have the opportunity to further their educational experience in influencing lifestyle change through a combination of educational opportunities to enhance awareness, change behavior and create environments that support good health practices using effective wellness coaching and behavioral change strategies.

Specific hands-on experience may be gained, under close supervision of current staff, in providing comprehensive fitness and wellness evaluations, innovative fitness programming and small group training, one-on-one and small group coaching, and the delivery of comprehensive wellness programs or educational presentations. All work will be performed under close supervision of existing staff to further the educational experience.

Additional domains of learning may include:
  • Wellness programs and services for DAHLC members and prospective members
  • The design, execution and evaluation of safe, effective wellness programs for individuals and groups
  • The opportunity to learn and experience various wellness tests, assessments and evaluations
  • The development and delivery of customized health promotion materials and presentations
  • The delivery of high-quality customer service with confidentiality and compassion
  • Skills to support members in making optimum choices for personal health
  • Skills to establish positive customer relationships through effective communication in one-on-one or group settings

Track 2: Worksite Wellness Coordinator Intern
The Worksite Wellness Coordinator Internship at Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center (DAHLC) is aimed at providing a comprehensive hands-on practical and technical learning experience in administering population health programs to enhance the culture of health in the worksite. Interns can enhance their professional development and gain hands-on experience in innovative wellness programming for the employees of Mayo Clinic.

The Worksite Wellness Coordinator Intern gains educational experience in consultation and project management in the development and evaluation of all levels of health and wellness programs and services. They are exposed to population lifestyle strategies through a combination of efforts to enhance awareness, change behavior, and create environments that support good health practices.

Interns are educated on and gain hands-on experience in the full delivery of population interventions, including assessment, engagement and marketing, targeted interventions, and supportive environmental and policy strategies to enhance and sustain health. All work will be performed under close supervision of existing staff to further the educational experience.

Additional domains of learning may include:
  • Appropriate assessments to determine the needs of this population
  • The development, marketing, implementation, and evaluation of health and wellness programs and interventions for employees at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota
  • Creation and delivery of customized health promotion materials and presentations
  • Supporting employees in making optimum choices for personal health
  • Effective communication in one-on-one or group settings for positive customer relationships
  • The growth and maintenance of the wellness champion program, including customized resources and programs
  • Exposure to all scheduled work site wellness activities and events and having direct observation and involvement in meetings, project planning committees, and other discussions
  • The delivery of high-quality customer service with confidentiality and compassion
As an intern, you have the opportunity to attend Mayo Clinic and department sponsored educational events as well as observe other disciplines at Mayo Clinic, including:
  • Biomechanics
  • Sports medicine
  • Dietetics
  • Behavioral medicine
  • Occupational therapy
  • Cardiac rehabilitation
  • General and orthopedic surgery
  • Patient education


Qualifications: The incumbent must be enrolled in a degree program from a college or university. Typically, this internship would occur after the student has taken most of the courses required by the degree program.

Where applicable - the degree program must require an internship as a graduation requirement (or offer as a credit option.

Schedule Details: DAHLC business hours are 4:30 AM - 8:30 PM; schedule could vary within these times based on assignment and department needs. This is a temporary internship for spring 2018, with an anticipated start date in January or February 2018, and an anticipated end date in May 2018. Start and end dates are subject to change.
