A Life-Changing CareerPosition Summary: Principal Technologist for Data and Advanced Analytics
Mayo Clinic is seeking a technology leader to establish strategy and guide implementation of platforms, tools and vendor partnerships for data aggregation and analysis in healthcare and medicine, including use of advanced statistical methods and machine learning for medical decision support. This position takes direction from Mayo's CIO, CTO and Vice Chair of Enterprise Technology Services, with accountability to the Mayo practice and Mayo Clinic Research through Mayo's Center for Translational Informatics and Knowledge Management.
The position is responsible for developing and guiding a portfolio of in-house technical capabilities, along with collaborative efforts with technology and health IT vendors. It will serve as a key contributor to a robust and innovative business and technology plan that will serve Mayo Clinic enterprise-wide.
The Principal Technologist will report to the Chief Technology Officer. This role will have leadership responsibility for all aspects of developing Mayo Clinic's data and analytics investment and their implementation. Specific areas of focus include:
- Provide a data and analytic roadmap of opportunity and investment informed by Mayo Clinic Strategic Plan
- Understand the role of Mayo knowledge and the use of analytics in algorithmic decision making and knowledge delivery
- Ongoing evaluation and assessment of technologies, vendors, and products as related to analytics, machine learning, and data processing
- Work with key stakeholders to develop a reference advanced analytics architecture and to develop infrastructure and capabilities for data provisioning, processing, and analytics
- Advise on implementation of "Analytics as a Service" as an opportunity to utilizing existing solutions or provide licensing and commercialize opportunities for decision making
The successful candidate will have:
- Strong customer-facing, change management and transformation skills,
- IT Experience and understanding of big data, statistical and machine learning, and cloud and high performance computing, applied to medical and health care problems
- Ability to develop and communicate technology strategy and technology decisions with Senior Practice and Research leadership and Senior IT leaders.
- Ability to think in both "product" and internal architecture terms to ensure investments provide sustainability and capability for Mayo Clinic's practice and business opportunities.
- Exceptional business acumen and ability to simplify and communicate complex topics in business language
Responsibilities: Responsible for technical architecture and recommendations in data and analytic domains. Works to ensure that the technology objectives and solutions of the enterprise are aligned to the business mission, strategy, goals, and processes. Ability to establish, maintain, and communicate a technology vision within an Information Technology discipline. Builds a critical mass of support at all levels of the organization and across departments for a given technical direction through talks, articles, blogging, demonstrations, or interpersonal communication. Participates in major technical decisions, develops technical proposals that consider alternatives and business case, gains needed institution approvals, and works effectively across departmental organizations gaining consensus of stakeholders. Possess and maintains a strong working knowledge of multi-platform technical environments and fluent with current industry trends and directions. Serves on appropriate committees, acts as a resource to institutional committees, on an ad hoc basis, provides consultation in their area of expertise, and facilitates institutional work groups. Must be customer focused and possess excellent communications and interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of personnel at various levels within and outside the institution.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in information technology or related technical field plus ten years of progressive technology leadership experience required.
Administrative experience must include working with corporate leadership, administrators and technology staff with demonstrated ability to partner with senior leadership. Exceptional technical acumen, business acumen and ability to simplify and communicate complex topics in business language. Experience in information technology architecture, software product development and acquisition, development and management of database systems, infrastructure and operations for data networks and computer hardware acquisition and deployment. Excellent communication and team building and collaboration skills. Demonstrated ability to develop architectural designs and provide pragmatic and effective leadership for their development and implementation.
Additional Qualifications: Advanced expertise in multiple data and analytic technologies. Advanced project and deliverable consistency through repeatable and reliable performance. Advanced initiative and self-motivation to complete tasks and assignments on time. Experience working in healthcare technology. Must be able to work independently and able to lead and mentor in a team environment. Master's degree in applicable field (data science, medical informatics, statistics, computer science or machine learning) preferred.
License or Certification: TOGAF 9 Professional Certification is Preferred

Compensation Detail: Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum salary every 2 weeks is approx $5,165.60, based on a full-time position.
