GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Slaugenhaupt lab in the Center for Human Genetic Research is seeking a highly motivated and well-organized candidate for a full-time research technologist position to assist post-docs and Principal Investigator in current research projects. Our lab focuses on two neurological disorders, familial dysautonomia (FD) and mucolipidosis type IV (MLIV), as well as the common cardiac disorder mitral valve prolapse (MVP). Primary responsibilities are to perform experiments for research projects under supervision of the project head and the PI of the laboratory. The perfect candidate is enthusiastic and passionate about solving scientific problems, has proven research experience performing molecular or cellular biology techniques and has at least basic experience with model organisms.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Research Technologist will work independently and perform routine/non-routine techniques such as:

DNA/RNA isolation from cells and tissues.
PCR, RT-PCR and quantitative PCR.
Protein extraction and Western blot.
Eukaryotic cell culture and transfection.
Model system dissections.
Histological analysis and immunohistochemistry.
Colony maintenance including breeding, genotyping and maintaining a database.
Attend and participate in lab meetings, including preparing reports and presenting progress.
Assist in preparation of manuscripts, poster presentations, and project reports.
Contribute to troubleshooting experiments and developing new laboratory processes and techniques
Maintain detailed laboratory notebook.
Assists with maintenance of laboratory records in compliance with safety and biohazard guidelines.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work will be performed at our lab in the Simches Research Center, located on Cambridge Street at the main MGH campus in Boston.

Education, training, experience:

EDUCATION: BA/BS Required. Preferred degree in biology, cell biology, or molecular biology

EXPERIENCE: Requires 3 plus years of directly related and progressively more responsible experience in a research laboratory environment.
