About Lowell Five Bank

The Lowell Five is a mutual savings bank with assets over 680 million dollars and thirteen branches located in the Downtown and Highlands sections of Lowell and the surrounding communities of Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Tewksbury, Westford, Wilmington, Tyngsboro and Pepperell. The Bank has been serving the personal banking needs of the working people of the Greater Lowell Area for over 153 years. During all of this time we have continuously maintained an active leadership role in the economic success and development of the city and the surrounding communities. The history of The Lowell Five is closely linked to the development of the City of Lowell. In 1854 there were five banks in Lowell, but none of them would accept deposits of less than a $1.00, an amount far beyond the means of the average mill worker. A group of Lowell businessmen and public servants, that included Reverend Horatio Wood and Judge Nathan Crosby, concerned that the average worker had no place where they could save money and earn interest, decided to start a bank that would pay interest on deposits of as little as five cents. They obtained a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to open "The Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank". Today, The Lowell Five is the oldest financial institution in the city and is still devoted to the same philosophy of providing friendly financial services to the neighborhood people of Lowell and the surrounding suburbs. The Bank has grown from its original first day deposit of $7,026 to over 680 million in assets and is one of the safest and best capitalized mutual savings banks in New England. Our staff is highly trained and knowledgeable about all the products we offer and we pride ourselves on our dedication to delivering old fashioned, personalized, customer service in modern, upscale, comfortable settings. At The Lowell Five we have always valued our customers and our goal is to develop professional relationships where everyone is treated in a respectful and courteous manner.
