Job Description

The Laboratory Technician will provide key support for faculty research lab, including animal care, experimental work and general laboratory oversight.

Accountabilities:

* Mouse colony maintenance
* Animal husbandry including: breeding, weaning of mice, changing cages weekly, checking on animal health and record keeping
* Coordinate and participate in weekly cage changes and autoclaving of cages
* Update colony census software under supervision
* Genotyping: tail biopsies, genomic DNA preparation, some PCR genotyping reactions
* Communicate with Animal Facility Manager and senior lab members regarding animal health and compliance, knowledge of IACUC rules and regulations, including specific approved IACUC protocols


* Biological sample preparation and testing
* DNA maxipreps
* Extraction of human DNA, PCR amplification, prepare samples for sequencing, sequence analyses, ordering primers
* Biological sample preparation and assistance; could include upon training, perfusions, dissections, etc.


* Laboratory organization
* Maintain ongoing list of supplies needed for successful research; order supplies, maintain inventory of supplies and chemicals, unpack and store supplies received and clean glassware
* Prepare solutions, pour agar plates and autoclave items
* Monitor liquid nitrogen dewars
* Monitor rotation for animal checks


* Oversight of undergraduate students and interns
* Demonstrate use of lab equipment
* Oversee students performing procedures and experiments
* Demonstrate cage changing procedures
* Oversee and coordinate undergraduate student activities for cage cleaning



Qualifications:

* Associates Degree in Biology, Behavioral Neuroscience, Neuroscience or equivalent combination of education and experience
* One to three years related work experience working with mice or other animals and/or in a laboratory setting is preferred
* Wet-lab experience is a plus
* Must be detail oriented and have excellent record keeping skills
* Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Solid analytical, decision making and problem solving skills
* Solid computer skills with experience using word processing and spreadsheet software
* Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and credit history based upon the requirements of the position

Special Considerations:

* This is a part-time position; working at least 30 hours per week, up to 37.5 hours per week; the position is staffed 12 months per year
* This position is benefits eligible
* This position is funded by soft dollars; there is no severance associated with this position
* Will often be required to walk, stand, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl and lift up to 25 lbs on a regular basis
* Will nearly continuously use hands and arms to reach, feel and handle objects, talk or hear

80%

Grade and Hiring Minimum:

7-37.5; $27,210
