Job Description

The Geospatial Data and Visualization Specialist, provides expertise in spatial analysis, database management and Geographic Information Systems application development to faculty, students and staff. This expertise includes consultation, training and support of faculty, staff and students. The Geospatial Data and Visualization Specialist facilitates the advancement and adoption of innovative geospatial and data visualization tools and techniques.

Accountabilities:

* Designs, develops, and supports Geographic Information Systems and supporting data and visualization technologies for faculty research, and undergraduate and graduate student course work
* Promotes and supports the adoption and implementation of geospatial and emerging visualization technologies among students and faculty
* Provides individualized training to faculty, staff and students
* Integrates Geographic Information Systems into a variety of web publishing platforms
* Collaborates with other Library and Technology Services members to maintain and enhance server side geospatial software and technologies
* Conducts outreach to increase awareness of locational data and its ability to achieve teaching and learning goals
* Designs assignments to support data visualization across disciplines
* Understands web architecture and technologies to include knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, JSON, and Python


* Facilitates the advancement and adoption of innovative tools and techniques
* Identifies and evaluates new software and hardware
* Recommends, implements and promotes the adoption of new technologies
* Disseminates information about new technology advances
* Monitors current trends and emerging technologies and attends on-site or virtual training sessions to develop and maintain skills


* Contributes to the Library and Technology Services organization, Lehigh University, higher education and other communities by participating in service activities and providing education and training on topics related to geospatial data and various forms of visualization
* Collaborates with other Library and Technology Services members to problem solve, identify opportunities for improvement and share knowledge and information about spatial data and its visualization
* Produces supporting materials for events such as written documentation, online tutorial videos, and podcasts
* Participates in professional activities that contribute to the individual and Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning knowledge and skills
* Provides individualized training as needed to faculty, staff, and students
* Works collaboratively with teams across Library and Technology Services
* Flexibility and willingness to shift range of responsibilities to meet evolving campus needs


* Expands and enhances Lehigh University's footprint and reputation in the arena of geospatial technology and research among higher education, and other communities
* Supports faculty and staff with review and preparation of grant proposals including the feasibility of geospatial technologies and budget requirements
* Implements innovative geospatial technologies to support research grants
* Writes and presents papers, presentations and workshops/seminars at professional conferences and to the University community
* Supports collaboration with other universities on projects related to geospatial technology
* Pursues continuing education opportunities and maintains professional certifications


* Consults and collaborates with administrative offices in their use of Geographic Information Systems technologies
* Inform ESRI users regarding system upgrades and implications for users
* Provide documentation and support for Geographic Information Systems server and end users
* Facilitate user group meetings and discussions
* Provide training and appropriate support for departments and staff to ensure staff are able to be independent of GDVS support.
* As necessary, recruit students to help with support functions and documentation
* Recommend engagement with external GIS consultants when university projects extend beyond the scope or scale of GDVS support


* Documents technical specifications and programs
* Document code and software applications to provide clarity
* Creates new documentation to support development efforts
* Updates documentation as needed
* Creates documentation and training materials to support end-users
* Manages ArcGIS online and publishing roles
* Manages ArcGIS web services



Qualifications:

* Bachelor's Degree in Computing, Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science, Computer Science or a related field
* Master's degree, GISP certification and 1-2 years of higher education work experience preferred
* Three to five years related work experience in ArcGIS environment
* Experience with relational databases such as Microsoft Access, MySQL, Oracle
* Knowledge of standard office software
* Solid communication and interpersonal skills
* Solid writing ability and organizational skills
* Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, county and national criminal background checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance. Based upon the requirements of the position Lehigh may also request credit history reports, motor vehicle checks and professional license/certification verification
