About Legacy Health Services

Legacy Community Health Services was created when the Montrose Clinic and The Assistance Fund merged in 2005. The Montrose Clinic, established in 1978, was a full-service healthcare center that served the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) and HIV-positive communities and other local residents. It was originally established to treat sexually transmitted diseases and soon developed a specialty in HIV, becoming one of the country's leading HIV testing and treatment centers. As it expanded into primary healthcare, the Clinic widened its focus to include uninsured and underinsured Houstonians, as well as its core group of GLBT patients. As the number of HIV and AIDS cases increased during the 1980s and 1990s, so did the cost of treatment -- often becoming an unbearable burden for HIV-positive patients. The Assistance Fund was founded in 1987 in response to this need, helping patients pay for medication and insurance premiums. When these patients became too ill to continue working, the problem just intensified. The Assistance Fund helped these patients maintain their quality of life, dignity and peace of mind. Both organizations had served Houston side-by-side for years and shared many common clients. By joining forces, we would be able to expand our programs and reach even more extraordinary people. Together, we have been able to grow our community healthcare initiatives while still meeting the needs of the HIV-positive and GLBT communities.
