For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Post College Appointee/Instrumentation Engineer to support instrumentation and experimentation efforts for a wide range of projects in non-destructive experimental measurements and material characterization. You will have education and knowledge in one or more sub disciplines including: Data Acquisition programming, vibrational, acoustic, ultrasonic, optical, and other similar non-contact, non-destructive experimental measurements, and characterization technologies. This position is located within the Materials & Nondestructive Engineering Section of the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties

* Support development of experimental procedures and techniques to support a wide range of acoustic, modal, non-destructive and structural characterization projects.
* Characterize components and materials using techniques such as pulse-echo ultrasound, acoustic emission, modal, spectral and resonant analysis, and mechanical testing
* Implement new hardware software and modify existing experimental systems.
* Evaluate performance ofAng systems.
* Collect and analyze data using established techniques used in materials research and report results.
* Perform other duties as assigned.


* Recent B.S. or M.S. degree in physics, mechanical or electrical engineering, or closely related discipline (within two years of application).
* Working familiarity with experimental Instrumentation, digital oscilloscopes, signal generators, signal conditioning, analog and digital filters, piezoelectric transducers, accelerometers, microphones, digital recording media.
* Ability to work on control systems and programming of automated DAQ tools within a laboratory/hands-on environment.
* Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills necessary to prepare and present reports and document results.
* Ability to work within a laboratory/hands-on environment.
* Basic understanding of parametric modeling software for design and modeling.
* Ability to work independently as well as in multidisciplinary teams.

Desired Qualifications

* MS degree in Physics, Mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering.
* Expertise in Acoustics, signal processing and data acquisition and experimentation.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
