Job Overview

Komatsu America Corp. (Chicago O'Hare, IL - www.komatsuamerica.com) has a great internship opportunity for a Mechanical Engineering or Automotive Tech. college student in Junior or Senior standing (Target 2021 graduate) for our Construction division. This intern will be immersed in an intense, highly structured learning environment where the candidate can assimilate to the Komatsu culture and make an important contribution during a targeted 12 week internship. The ideal Mechanical Engineering student would thrive on applying their problem solving and troubleshooting skills to instill countermeasures and have an interest in learning the quality process. This internship has NO design engineering responsibilities and is a great opportunity for the intern who would like to learn more about both the Quality and Service side of Komatsu. While working with Quality, the intern will learn and investigate why certain failures are happening and the process of the countermeasures taken to improve product quality. In some failures, the intern will learn the differences between a defect in material/workmanship or if the failure was caused by the customer/operator.

In Service, the intern will learn what steps are taken in order to begin troubleshooting a failure. This will provide exposure to failure trends, finding the root cause of failures, and will learn different types of problem solving skills. This internship is intended to identify future high potential Komatsu employees.

Key Job Responsibilities

Learning: Master Komatsu culture (Komatsu Way, Kaizen, PDCA, Hou-Ren-Sou) and business model as demonstrated by completing and presenting a professional proposal for improvement.

Complete a Technical Support and Product Quality Rotation to include:

* Technical Service Requests (TSR) - Review and Respond to incoming issues
* Technical Service Information (TSI) / SMAP - Review and Process inbound TSI information
* Emergency Technical Service Information (ETSI) - Escalate current important issues
* Factory Campaigns (FC) - Understand and implement factory campaigns
* Warranty - Understand how to use warranty data to address issues


1. Education: Must be at least in Junior standing in the Mechanical Engineering program at an accredited college/university. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0+ and be able to apply their academic background to real business world experiences.

2. Experience: Prior experience with work study programs, school or volunteer leadership roles, participated on teams or in clubs, professional organizations, etc. preferred.

3. Soft Skills: Must have Excellent written and verbal communications. Ability to multi-task, manage multiple deadlines and work and thrive in a fast paced environment, ability to handle pressure. Strong motivation to make contributions to Komatsu and strong motivation to drive results. This intern must have an interest in capital goods / heavy equipment in the construction and mining industry.

4. PC Skills: Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office specifically with Pivot Tables, Vlook ups and other reporting tools a plus. Must demonstrate strong analytical and problem solving skills. Proven/ completed software development projects a plus.

5. Travel: This internship may require some travel.
