Job Description

Designs, specifies, prototypes and tests major subsystems and components of automated inspection systems in office and laboratory settings. Plans, directs, coordinates and at times performs activities involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and repair of mechanical or electromechanical components and subsystems. On a regular basis communicates directly with field service, sales and customers to gain understanding of performance and reliability of major subsystems and components. Travels extensively to customer locations to perform field validation work, troubleshooting and supervise installation and commissioning of major subsystems. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.Takes designs of major subsystems and components from initial concept to production. Uses engineering tools such as 3D CAD and analysis packages in the design process. Develops and implements functionality and reliability tests of designs. Responsible for designing any special test equipment or fixtures for reliability and functionality tests. Develops methods and procedures for testing major subsystems and components. Solves problems related to the design, manufacture, function and reliability of equipment. Gathers data from the field, manufacturing floor, quality control and other sources in determining cause of the problem. Uses structured problem solving techniques in finding the solutions to problems related to major subsystems.Works with the Manufacturing Engineering group to develop processes for the manufacture of components and major subsystems. Works directly with suppliers on specification, development and application of purchased parts.Travels to customer sites to install beta test components and subsystems and to assist/advise in the repair of existing equipment. Observes automated inspection equipment in the field for the purpose of proactive product improvement and reactive problem solving. Works directly with customers to solve performance and reliability related problems with components and subsystems. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Direct junior engineers, technicians and manufacturing personnel in the setup and execution of tests and prototype builds. Lead small teams in designing major subsystems and contributes in a structured problem solving task of a major subsystem.QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. MSME or equivalent with two or more years of experience in the design of capital equipment. PhD or equivalent with no experience.Experienced in designing major subsystems and components of industrial equipment preferably within the food processing industry. Automated Inspection System knowledge is very desirable. Demonstrated experience in the design of sheet metal, machined, extruded, cast and molded parts. Knowledge of welding and the design and specification of weldments. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to communicate effectively in English is required for position based in the United States. Ability to communicate effectively in Dutch and English is required for positions based in Belgium. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as solving multiple equations and differential equations. Ability to solve complex engineering problems using mathematical techniques.TECHNICAL SKILLS AutoCAD and 3D CAD (Pro-E preferred)Modeling using FEMGeometric Dimensioning and TolerancingStructured problem solving techniques such as Taguchi or Shainan MethodsProject managementTRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: International travel will be required periodically, travel to customer sites, suppliers and other Key facilities up to 25% of the time is possible.PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
