Established in 1891, in a rented, four-bedroom home in Jamaica, Queens, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center (JHMC) today is a 431-bed, not-for-profit teaching hospital. JHMC serves a population greater than 1.2 million in Queens and eastern Brooklyn. JHMC has developed a comprehensive network of Ambulatory Care Centers throughout Brooklyn and Queens known as the MediSys Family Health Care Network. These facilities provide a full range of services, including pediatrics, internal medicine, family practice, obstetrics, gynecology, podiatry, surgery, gastroenterology, dermatology, neurology, orthopedics, dental, radiology, social services, WIC, mental health, nutrition, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, pulmonary rehabilitation, cardiology, and urology. The MediSys centers treated approximately 350,000 patients last year. The hospital's Emergency Medicine Department- a level I Trauma Center - is one of the busiest in New York and the only in Southeastern Queens. In 2008, more than 115,000 patients were treated, which accounted for 80 percent of the hospital's admissions. The department also has a Fast Track Center and Chest Pain Center, a Queens first. The kid-friendly, state-of-the-art Pediatric Emergency Department is accessible 24 hours, 7 days a week. Most recently, the department installed an electronic medical record and tracking system to enhance patient care. The OB/GYN Department delivered approximately 3,000 babies in 2008, in the facility's modern and spacious Labor, Delivery and Recovery suites. The Women's Health Center, designed to address the growing needs of women in the community, cares for about 40,000 women annually. JHMC recently opened its brand new state-of-the-art Trump Pavilion for Adult Nursing and Rehabilitation. The 224-bed facility will provide patients with state-of-art sub acute rehabilitation and skilled nursing care in a beautiful and modern environment. The Department of Radiology at JHMC uses some of the latest technologies, including a 64-slice CT scanner, and offers a wide variety of state-of-the-art diagnostic and specialty services, including ultrasound, mammography, fluoroscopic procedures, diagnostic radiology, vascular laboratory, nuclear medicine, and interventional radiology. The Dental Department at Jamaica Hospital is an impressive 19 chair, 11,000 square-feet, state-of-the-art facility. The department provides a wide variety of services for children and adults and treated approximately 30,500 patients in 2008. JHMC is one of the few hospitals in Queens offering mental health programs to the community through its Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health. The department hosts educational events and has a vast array of comprehensive services. This includes inpatient and outpatient services to evaluate and treat patients for various disorders. In addition, the department offers consultation and liaison services, as well as child and adolescent services. The hospital also has a dedicated psychiatric Emergency Room. The Department of Pediatrics at JHMC offers a wide variety of medical and surgical subspecialty services in modern facilities for children from birth through adolescence. The department consists of a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a state-of-the-art level III certified unit. The department also consists of 10 nurseries and a children's playroom supervised by a child life specialist. The department has several ambulatory care clinics throughout Queens that provide care for a variety of subspecialties. JHMC also offers a full range of rehabilitative services through its Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The department offers acute in-patient and out-patient services in each of its two rehabilitation units-"The Brady Institute," a nationally recognized traumatic brain injury & coma recovery unit, and the Margaret T. Palomino Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, a unit that specializes in treating individuals with acute physical disabilities.
