Job Description

Area Manager – Chemical Recovery


The Chemical Recovery Area Manager is an integral part of the Power & Recovery department and provides overall leadership and direction for all activities concerning the safe and efficient operation of the mill’s Chemical Recovery process.  The Chemical Recovery Area Manager will work closely with the other Power & Recovery team members to achieve the department’s scorecard objectives.  Major equipment includes two sets of evaporators, one lime kiln, and one slaker. This is a Power & Recovery leadership position with the responsibility of assisting the Business Unit Manager of Power & Recovery with implementation of the reliability roadmap to keep the Power & Recovery department equipment operating as efficiently as possible.  The Chemical Recovery Area Manager is also responsible for coordinating production activities with the Maintenance FLL, Operations Maintenance Coordinator, Reliability Engineer, Planner, Process Engineer, shared Front Line Leaders  (4 shifts) with the pulp mill area, Area Manager – Power, and forty three hourly employees, which includes eight shift maintenance employees.  This position is responsible for maintenance and reliability of the Chemical Recovery Process and is responsible for helping the BUM to coordinate production activities with maintenance, quality control, peer production areas and procurement to obtain optimum production and utilization of human resources and process equipment.  The Chemical  Recovery Area Manager will play a key role in working with the 3PQP coordinator to develop training programs for the teams as well as ensuring that their skill proficiency is maintained. 


This facility is a High Performance Work System facility with production personnel doing maintenance as well as maintenance personnel doing production work.  Each area is expected to be kept neat, clean, organized, following 5S procedures.  The high performance team will use Manufacturing Excellence toolbox methods to consistently improve operations and efficiencies to achieve 3% year over year improvements. 


The Franklin Mill has a collaborative work environment, where all departments and all their employees work with other departments of the mill to achieve mill goals.  Personnel from different departments will be moved to other departments when needed to assist operations or maintenance from a whole mill perspective.  This facility was repurposed and restarted in 2012 to produce fluff pulp.  This position is responsible for developing training, safe operating procedures, and establishing a culture of educating their personnel for world class (Tier One) operations.



BS degree in Engineering or high school diploma with equivalent experience, minimum 5  years related experience; working knowledge of operation/maintenance of evaporators, causticizing, lime kiln,  and related equipment; ability to effectively communicate and coordinate with maintenance and other areas of operation.  Outstanding leadership skills are required.
