Job Description

Soil and Plant Nutrition Program

International Fertilizer Development Center

Muscle Shoals, AL

Intern Position:

The International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) is looking for a student intern to work directly with IFDC's Senior Scientists during the growing season (usually mid-May to mid-August) to gain hands-on crop production experience.

Agronomy related tasks may include:

* Working closely with experienced Soil Scientists.
* Performing regular field and greenhouse checks and diagnose problems.
* Insecting, weed and disease monitoring (field and greenhouse experiments)
* Monitoring soil moisture status.
* Irrigation scheduling.
* Soil sampling.
* Other duties as identified by Senior Scientist necessary to successfully implement greenhouse trials and support field trials.

Specific Greenhouse duties:

This temporary position will involve working with Agronomist in the greenhouse to establish/plant, maintain and harvest trials. Postharvest activities will include preparing soil and plant tissue samples generated from IFDC's greenhouse trials for laboratory analysis. The work primarily involves drying, subsampling, threshing (i.e. plant tissue) and grinding soil and plant tissue samples in preparation for chemical analyses. Care must be exercised in properly transferring and labeling the samples as they are processed. For any foreign samples, the grinding area must be cleaned, and all associated original containers must be sterilized.

Time and Dates Needed: Summer 2019 (240 hours)

Salary: $1,000/semester (paid every 30 days for 3 months or every 80 hours in 3 installments)

Citizenship: Open to US and international students

Location: IFDC, Complex F, Reservation Road, Muscle Shoals, AL

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

* Proficient computer skills - Microsoft Office software, email, internet, spread sheets.
* Good diagnostic and decision-making skills.
* Proven ability to effectively communicate - verbal and written skills.
* Desire to serve farmers and others involved in the agriculture industry.
* Willingness to work as a team member.
* Desire to remain updated with new agriculture trends and technology.
* Motivation to learn daily.
* Ability to work outside during heat of day and ability to walk several miles per day.

Other Requirements:

* Student pursuing a degree in agriculture with emphasis in agronomy, crop, soil, weed management, ag. business or other ag science course work.
* Applicant with background in agriculture will have advantages.
* Must have a valid driver's license and have proof of medical insurance coverage.
