Silicon Photonics Design Intern

Job Description

Intel's Silicon Photonics Products Division (SPPD) is currently looking for an excellent graduate student to fill in an intern position as a Silicon Photonics Design Engineer. The successful candidate will be responsible for high speed silicon photonic integrated chip (PIC) design and characterization for next generation of coherent detection products. You will work closely with other photonic component design engineers for device design, simulations, and chip floor planning and tape-out.

The ideal candidate should exhibit behavioral traits that indicate:

* Verbal and written communication skills
* Problem solving skills

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

* Design and simulate passive and active silicon photonics components such as polarization splitter/rotator, waveguide coupler, 90-deg hybrid, modulator, waveguide based photodiode, semiconductor optical amplifier, and tunable laser.
* Tape out testchip for PIC characterization
* Define test plan and characterize high-speed performance of the PIC
* Analyze the wafer-level-test data and die-level test data


You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates. Experience listed below would be obtained through relevant training and/or research experience.

Minimum qualifications

* Must have a MS, currently be enrolled/pursuing a PhD program in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optical Science or related technical discipline
* Minimum 1+ years of relevant hands-on experience in photonic component design and characterization including laser, modulator, and photodiode
* Minimum 1+ years of experience in various optical design/simulation tools such as Beamprop, Fullwave, Fimmwave, Fimmprop, Lumerical FDTD /Mode solutions as well as high speed simulation tools such as High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) and Advanced Design System (ADS)

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

* Background in optical waveguide, semiconductor laser, electro-optic modulator, and PIN/APD photo detector
* Previous experience in Silicon Photonics
* 2 years of hands-on experience in semiconductor device and process simulation tools such as Sentaurus and Atlas
* 3+ years of experience with statistical data analysis and process
