Job Description:

The Supervisor, Equipment Engineering is an essential part of the equipment engineer leadership team.  The equipment engineering team provides expertise, service, and support to San Diego Illumina headquarters by maintaining equipment at world class levels in a fast pace regulated environment and providing high level reliability exceeding Illumina’s dynamic development and manufacturing demands.  The supervisor will lead the equipment engineering team to achieve day to day equipment planned and unplanned maintenance and project operations.  They will be considered a subject matter expert in the area and they will independently lead investigations and resolutions of technical challenges.  They will work in a dynamic team-oriented environment that supports multiple operations and technologies helping Illumina deliver its highly complex product pipeline in a reliable and sustainable manner


  • Coach and facilitate functional team members in carrying out their responsibilities in a timely manner
  • Interface and coordinate with Manufacturing, Engineering, Supply Chain, R&D, Facilities, EHS, Quality, Regulatory, among other departments to ensure maintenance and project activities are on time and meet performance goals
  • Interface with Senior Management regularly on metrics status
  • Leads the monitoring of team performance and oversees the monitoring of equipment technical performance and technical inventory for area of responsibility
  • Maintain staff by recruiting, selecting, training employees and maintaining work instructions; maintain a safe, secure, and legal work environment
  • Make suggestions for continuous improvement, changes to team processes, and cost savings
  • Mentors, coaches, and facilitates reports to set the team up for success and provide for career growth both technically and managerially
  • Other duties may be assigned as determined by Management
  • Supports late stage development, qualification, calibration, and transfer of equipment used for operations
  • Provide guidance on maintenance/troubleshooting/verification strategies including but not limited to: techniques/methods/tools used, setting specifications, failure testing, data analysis
  • Schedule and coordinate resources to ensure activities are completed in a timely manner
  • While performing the duties of this job, is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs/ladders, kneel, crouch, or wear safety gear. Must regularly lift and / or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

  • Ability to operate in a fast pace environment and adapt to changes in priority
  • Advanced analytical skills and hands-on skills
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized and ability to multi-task are essential, lean/six sigma experience desirable
  • Experience in high-volume production in a high-tech consumables industry is desirable
  • Experience working in an ISO13485 or FDA or cGMP certified environment is mandatory
  • Familiarity with ERP, MRP, MES, CMMS, LIMS systems
  • Highly knowledgeable with optical/mechanical/electrical and fluidic systems
  • Metrology experience, control systems, automation, and technical writing skills highly desirable
  • Must be a strong communicator, verbal and written, able to effectively lead teams and interface well with the organization
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Travel up to 15%
  • Working experience in Life Sciences / Pharmaceutical / Medical Devices industries would be an advantage

  • AS Degree or equivalent required.  Bachelor's, in applicable field or equivalent desired
  • At least 5 years of direct work experience
  • Prior lead/supervisory experience preferred
