Job Description

Position Summary:

We are looking for a highly driven and talented laboratory automation engineer to join our growing array product development group. The array product development team creates new platform technologies to support the healthy screening (human and agricultural) and direct to consumer markets. In this role, you will be responsible for defining and implementing automation of novel sample prep and genomic analysis protocols to extend Illumina's array workflow automation solutions, as well as sustain existing protocols.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and verify software code / scripts for automated liquid handling, DNA processing and fluorescent imaging systems.

• Translate design inputs from assay biochemist’s manual protocols to produce robust automated workflows

• Construct and execute controlled experiments (including DOE's) to optimize processes to address yield and quality issues, reduce costs, and drive implementation of solutions to meet goals.

• Evaluate and test new automation technologies for their capabilities in terms of liquid handling, error mode detection, workflow traceability, and integration with lab management systems.

• Produce SDLC documentation of architecture and design for automated processes. 

• Develop and execute methods for equipment, process, and product performance testing.

• Utilize expertise in process engineering methodologies, such as FMEA, SPC, Gauge R&R, Critical Parameter Management, to measure and improve process capability and robustness of liquid handling and other DNA processing and measurement instruments.

• Perform root cause analysis investigation using root cause analysis tools (such as 8D, 7-Step, 5 Why’s or model-based problem solving, etc.) together with sound science and data analysis to make recommendations with consideration of both technical and compliance issues.

• Communicate verbal and written status updates towards project goals

• Assist in writing and executing installation, operation, and performance qualification validation protocols and reports

• Support process deviation remediation and non-conformances/CAPA’s with supporting technical documentation or reports.

Requirements:

• BSc / MSc in engineering and/or SW development, plus minimum of 5 years work experience in the genomics, biotech or pharmaceutical fields

• Proven capability to take scientific bench protocols from the bench to the robot

• Proficiency in liquid handling robot programming is required (experience with Hamilton and/or Tecan robotics is strongly desired)

• Experience integrating laboratory information management systems (LIMS) with automated systems

• High level computer skills (intermediate level programming knowledge is required)

• Experience with fluorescence imaging technologies and biochemical processes is desirable.

• Experience in editing or troubleshooting process workflows and automation equipment

• Proven fundamental understanding of fluid dynamics as it pertains to robotic liquid handling strategies

• Understanding of impact of mechanical design of laboratory automation hardware on function within high throughput biochemical workflows

• Knowledge of various laboratory techniques may include but not limited to, analytical methods (e.g. HPLC, LC-MS, spectrophotometry), nucleic acid-based techniques (e.g. DNA fragmentation, quantification, PCR, array hybridization, etc.) and biochemical (enzymatic) assays.

• Demonstrated skills in completion of SDLC documentation and understanding of tools used to manage these such as GitHub, JIRA, JAMA etc.

• Proven capability to be able to work as part of a fast-paced cross-functional development team of engineers, SW developers and biochemist to produce robust and scalable automated workflow solutions.

• Demonstrated evidence of ability to communicate complex workflow solutions in verbal and written form to cross functional project teams to ensure key decisions can be made and technical challenges are understood

• High level problem solving and reasoning skills

• Experience with statistics, statistical process control, DOE techniques, and critical parameter management is desirable

• Knowledgeable of electronic change management and document management systems

• Experience with product development processes, design transfer experience, and project management is desirable
