Job Summary:

Join Illumina’s Product Development team and play an important role in the design and development of cutting-edge next generation sequencing and analysis platforms to unlock the power of the genome – to transform healthcare and beyond.

As an Illumina Software Systems Engineer, you will be part of an innovative, dynamic, and adaptive organization supporting new product development teams as well as sustaining operations. You will work with internal and external stakeholders to elicit and analyze user needs, transform operational/user needs into system requirements and communicate requirements to development teams. This crucial rolepartners with marketing, system architects, software/firmware development, bioinformatics and test teams to support development of Next Generation Sequencing platforms and associated analytical software. This role focuses on system engineering, and does not involve hands-on programming (though programming experience is a plus).


  • Research, analyze and design complex information systems and technology solutions in support of user/business needs
  • Coordinate across multi-disciplinary teams to transform user needs into a strong product concept, with a complete description of software system requirements
  • Lead use case development, requirements gathering, requirements analysis and review meetings
  • Create wireframes, high-quality workflow and process-flow diagrams, and other visualizations to communicate technical concepts and product architecture
  • Write formal, detailed software requirement specifications and software design documentation
  • Manage requirements priority, changes, and planning for future product versions in a scalable and sustainable design
  • Work in a collaborative team environment; accurately and fully describe user needs to UX, software/firmware development, bioinformatics and testing team members 
  • Support overall project management such as sprint and release planning
  • Work closely with software test teams to assist in prioritizing and troubleshooting system issues, and drive system design improvements 
  • Provide technical expertise in identifying, evaluating and developing procedures that are cost effective and meet user/business needs.
  • Coordinate with Product Management to build product development road map and track progress

Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Bioinformatics or related discipline
  • Ability to integrate large amounts of highly technical information from stakeholders, and distill into a plan that will produce a quality software product that meets user needs
  • 2-4 years of experience in the field of enterprise scientific/technical software
  • Knowledge of formalized requirements gathering and use case development
  • Strong written and verbal communication, and presentation skills, for both technical and non-technical audience
  • Experience with Software Development Life Cycle and Scrum methodologies
  • Ability to multi-task, work proactively, stay organized, and incorporate feedback in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with Next Generation Sequencing and data analysis, and its applications in science and health care, desired
  • Experience with enterprise process management tools (Jama, Jira, Confluence), desired
  • Experience with design/development/testing/support of cloud software, and cloud providers such as AWS, desired
  • Knowledge of sequencing laboratory workflows and laboratory information management systems (LIMS), desired
  • Experience with design/development/testing/support of software/firmware applications for biomedical instruments/medical devices/data analysis, a plus
  • Experience with prototyping tools (e.g. Balsamiq, Axure, Microsoft Expression Blend/Sketch Flow), a plus
