Currently Hydro One has a career opportunity for a Planning Engineer in the Environmental Services Division. 


Environmental Services Division

The Environmental Services Division has approximately one hundred employees who set corporate environmental policy and provide environmental services and support for the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of Hydro One assets.  We have a highly skilled and experienced workforce which obtains environmental approvals and provides construction support for lines and stations projects and operations. Our team is committed to protecting the environment and striving for continual improvement in our environmental management system and performance.

Specifically, we are looking for an environmental, civil, or chemical engineer, with at least three years of experience in obtaining Environmental Compliance Approvals relating to air/noise emissions and industrial sewage works under the Ontario Environmental Protection Act.  Related experience must include working with multi-disciplinary teams as part of the infrastructure planning and design process, assessing design alternatives to confirm they meet Environmental Compliance Approval requirements, and identifying mitigating measures as required.       


General Accountabilities:


Reporting to the Team Lead, Environmental Engineering and Project Support, the Planning Engineer will: 

  • Prepare applications/submissions for Environmental Compliance Approvals (air/noise emissions abatement, site drainage systems, etc.) under the Ontario Environmental Protection Act for capital engineering projects at electricity transmission and distribution stations.
  • As part of a capital engineering project team and with respect to environmental compliance, gather information and analyse data to assess existing conditions; identify Environmental Compliance Approval requirements for the proposed works; provide input to and review alternative design solutions, and identify mitigation measures.
  • Provide advice, guidance and assistance to project and asset managers responsible for new transmission and distribution projects and refurbishment of existing facilities regarding environmental legislation and guidelines, corporate policy and procedures.
  • Estimate budget and schedule requirements relating to Environmental Compliance Approvals and the terms and conditions of those approvals.
  • Prepare tender documents, evaluate, award and administer contracts, including quality assurance/quality control of consultants’ work.
  • Consult with the public and government agencies.
  • Provide support for environmental approvals and permitting processes for Hydro One stations and lines projects.
  • Provide assistance to obtain Environmental Assessment approvals under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act.


Essential Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with environmental legislation and approval processes (i.e. Environmental Compliance Approvals, Environmental Assessment approvals, construction related environmental permits) Thorough understanding of planning engineering for design and construction projects, equipment specifications and infrastructure drawings.
  • Knowledge of planning engineering and assessments to perform or coordinate environmental studies including the collection and analysis of environmental data, identification and mitigation of environmental impacts, identification and evaluation of project alternatives.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the completion of a four- year university degree in environmental engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering or equivalent.  Must have, or be eligible for, an Ontario professional engineer’s license, P.Eng. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the Ontario Environmental Protection Act, Ontario Environmental Assessment Act and environmental permits and approvals under other environmental legislation.
  • Familiarity with geographic information systems and relational database systems and tools.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Windows software (MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Requires a high level of initiative, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.


Essential Experience:

  • Obtained Environmental Compliance Approvals relevant to electricity transmission and distribution facilities.
  • Participated in a planning/design capacity on multi-disciplinary infrastructure project teams.
  • Contract management and project management experience is required. 
  • Proficient with computer software in order to undertake various activities related to the application and integration of assessments.
  • Strong technical writing experience for the preparation of environmental approval documents, manuals and specifications.
  • At least three years of related working experience is required.
