The role of the Specialist Database Administrator is to ensure the stable operation and administration of the Database Management Systems (DBMS), databases, and related components. This position will set up and operate database servers, import and prepare data, and assist staff with access, use, and understanding of data. The Specialist Database Administrator is also responsible to assist in deployment, perform operational management, database design, development/integration, migrations, and upgrading of all databases. The Database Administrator needs to be knowledgeable of multiple databases platforms, applicable operating systems, and related software components, and documenting best practices.

The Specialist Database Administrator adheres to processes and procedures for ongoing management of the database environment. The administrator will actively participate in functionality discussions, identify defects, and provide resolutions. This individual will have a flexible schedule based on customer demand.

The Specialist Database Administrator will liase with Global IT and business teams to ensure database deployments meet company and industry standards.  They will also act as a resource and mentor colleagues with less experience.  The Specialist Database Administrator will work independently and be able to do so with minimal guidance.  The administrator must have excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a team environment.



  1. Effectively partners with other IT groups to deliver IT services.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Collaborates with systems engineering, business application, and database architecture functions to ensure availability, reliability, and scalability of corporate database systems to meet business needs.
  • Implements and maintains change controls and testing processes for modifications to database systems.
  • Works with other technical staff to develop and modify database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures.
  • Identify project activities related to databases for a given project, as well as the amount of time involved to complete the tasks.


  1. Maintains in-depth working knowledge of business and technology and remains current with emerging industry trends.
  • Review and assess the impact of database changes prior to their implementation.
  • Provide technical expertise in the design and development of complex SQL queries and optimization.
  • Continuously grow skills toward industry expert status in relational Database Administration.
  • Contribute to and adhere to company and industry standards.


  1. Establishes and tracks appropriate metrics and key performance indicators.
  • Implements processes, tools, and supports ongoing service level measurement metrics and reporting.
  • Maintains and supports processes and ensures ongoing communication of such processes to internal teams and business customers.


  1. Identifies avenues for continuous improvement for services within scope of responsibility, including new approaches and processes that would contribute to improvements within department and to business growth/efficiency in the wider organization.
  • Uses skills, discretion, independent judgment, best practices and knowledge of internal or external business issues to improve database management and services.
  • Participates in key process improvements as they relate to the database environment.
  • Aligns with and performs administration tasks to support long-term strategic goals for data warehousing in conjunction with a variety of stakeholders including data users, department managers, and clients.
  • Responsible for configuration, changes, and enhancements to existing databases and systems.
  • Takes a new perspective on existing solutions
  • Adheres to policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure database integrity and security.
  • Monitors database system details within the database, including stored procedures and execution time, and implements efficiency improvements and optimizes database performance.
  • Monitors and optimizes physical data storage for database systems and implements capacity and resource expansions when and where necessary.


  1. Provides business consulting and technical support to all business areas globally.
  • Checks incident management tool for entries on database and database resource issues; prioritizes, responds to, and resolves assigned team incidents as appropriate.
  • Serves as cornerstone for escalating database issues; engages vendor support; provides timely response to customer escalations. Participate in on-call support.
  • Performs and implements DBMS upgrades, maintenance fixes, and vendor-supplied patches
  • Performs and implements redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery, database backup, recovery, and data archiving to ensure effective availability, protection, and integrity of data assets.
  • Identifies data discrepancies and data quality issues and works to ensure data consistency and integrity.
  • Provides support to end-users of data, both internal and external, which includes designing queries and reports according to end user requirements and facilitating internal customer connections to the data to ensure they are accomplished in an efficient manner.
  • Creates and/or modifies complex database scripts
  • Creates and maintains PowerShell scripts to automate database deployment, configuration and management tasks



Academic Credentials/Length of Experience Requirements:

  • BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Science (or related field) or equivalent job experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of database administrator experience with Bachelor's Degree or 8 years of database administrator experience with a High School Diploma.
  • 5-8 years overall experience


Specialized skills/technical knowledge                                

  • Experience with SQL 2008 R2 or higher and Windows Operating System required.
  • Proficient in database backup and general backup techniques using mainstream backup software.
  • Knowledge of SAN technology implementation and administration.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, and WINS technologies.
  • Knowledge of System Development Methodology.
  • Demonstrate decision making, problem solving and analytical skills with attention given to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong verbal and written and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate a cooperative positive attitude and effective interpersonal and communication skills with clients, coworkers and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Working knowledge of database recovery, database administration (including security), database troubleshooting, optimization, and performance tuning required.
  • Experience with Windows Server Failover Clusters, Partitioning, and Encryption preferred.
