Job Description

The Histology Technician is responsible for the preparation of all surgical specimens for microscopic examination by the Pathologist. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge includes the use of specialized instrumentation, quality control requirements, and preventive maintenance. Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct. Supports the laboratory mission. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions:
Performance of analytical procedures:
• Performs job functions in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Maintains current knowledge of departmental updates.
• Reviews quality control (QC) and maintenance per section specific policies and responds appropriately to out of range Q.C. conditions
• Accommodates changes in workload within the department
• Performs procedures within established turn-around-times
• During light workload situations, uses time to perform additional tasks/ duties for the department
• Maintains a clean, well-organized and properly stocked work area
• Demonstrates flexibility in accepting schedule and work assignments
• Assist with ordering and storage of supplies
• Able operate the laboratory tracking system (Cerebro) and Copath
• Complies with safety and biohazard regulations as outlined in the Hoag Laboratory Safety Manuel
• Tracks error in the Occurrence Tracking Information System (OTIS)
• Assist in data collection for QA indicators and KIQ projects
Problem Solving:
• Takes initiative in problem solving, to include appropriate action, follow up and documents accordingly.
• Takes responsibility for his/her own action, responds in a positive manner, and provides suggestions for error prevention.
• Reports to the Director, Supervisor, or Lead in a timely manner all “near misses,” potential, and actual errors

Competence:
• Maintains competence and professional development. Complies with peer evaluation and self-evaluation, in addition to achieving annual goals
• Maintains current knowledge of departmental updates and policy and procedures

 

Education, Training and Experience
Required:
• High school graduate with College courses in basic science. Experience as a Histology Tech or A.S.C.P. certified preferred.
• Minimum of one year work experience or equivalent is required.

 

Skills or Other Qualifications
Required:
• Knowledge of section specific test methodology and instrumentation
• Knowledge of IHC and special staining techniques
• Knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control
• Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, and organizational ability

Preferred:

• Knowledge of IHC and special staining techniques

 

License and Certifications
Required:

• N/A
Preferred:

• HT (histotechnician) or HTL (histotechnologist) certification
