Job Description

The Non Licensed Lab Assistant assists the Pathologists, Histotechs and Cytotechnologists in preparing specimens for processing and testing. Performs routine clerical and non-technical duties. Provides telephone support for the section.

Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct. Supports the

Laboratory mission. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge may include the use of specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements, and preventive maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Verifies that specimens received are labeled in accordance with department policy and procedure.
  • Verifies that specimens received meet test requirements.
  • Provides appropriate number of cassettes for pathology specimen.
  • Processes frozen sections for examination by the Pathologist within expected turnaround time.
  • Assists the Pathologist in the gross examination of surgical specimens as necessary.
  • Prepares all cytology specimens for examination by the Cytotechnologists. This includes the storage and disposal of cytology specimens.
  • Assists the Radiologists during fine needle aspirations by preparing and staining the smears in a timely manner.
  • Maintains clean, well-organized, and properly stocked work areas.
  • Responsible for the filing, storage, locating, and disposal of dissected pathology specimens.
  • Provides assistance to the Pathologist when frozen sections are scheduled at OPN.
  • Prepares specimens for dispatch to reference labs.
  • Performs job function in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge of departmental updates and Policies & Procedures.
  • Accommodates changes in workload within the department.
  • During light workload situations, uses time to departmental advantage by performing additional tasks/duties for the department.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in accepting schedule and work assignments.
  • Keeps supervisor or lead appropriately informed when problems or unusual situations arise.
  • Exercises authority when appropriate, recognizing needs and directing activities to department advantage.
  • Participates in efforts to improve the department through participation in QI activities.
  • Demonstrates problem solving initiative and problem solving skills which include appropriate activities, follow up and documentation.
  • Participates in the training of new employees, and offers guidance, assistance and direction to less experienced personnel.
  • Responds in a positive manner when discussing errors and offers suggestions for error prevention.
  • Adapts to changes or unusual circumstances to promote cooperation and minimize disruption to working environment.
  • Responds in a calm and professional manner to inquiries and complaints.
  • Reports all “near misses”, potential, and actual errors to the Supervisor or Lead in a timely manner.
  • Accurately performs computer functions.
  • Assists with receipt, distribution, and storage of supplies.
  • Prepares, dates and initials regents/supplies when they are put in use.

 

Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions, knowledge of section specific test information and instrumentation may be required.

 

Job Preferences:

  • High School Graduate.
  • College courses in basic science.
