Job Description

The Pathologist Assistant works under the Pathologists supervision, in the non-diagnostic areas of

Surgical Pathology. Non-diagnostic duties for Anatomical Pathology consist of, but are not limited to: external examination, evisceration, dissection, tissue selection, and tissue banking. Such non-diagnostic duties for Surgical Pathology consist of, but are not limited to: prosection, tissue selection, tissue banking and quality assurance. Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct. Supports the Laboratory mission. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures.

This knowledge may include the specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements and preventative maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned.

In addition to the above, the Pathologist Assistant Lead responsible for scheduling, supervision and training of Pathologist Assistants. The Lead is responsible for quality assurance activities working closely with the medical director, pathology manager and the quality council. In addition, a significant portion of the Leads time is spent managing the APLIS including support of the pathologists and staff with all IT related concerns in AP. Supports the pathologist with software of the APLIS and voice dictation systems including upgrades and implementation of new modules to improve workflow and address regulatory and compliance issues including billing.

 

Essential Functions

  • Assures appropriate specimen accessioning
  • Obtains pertinent clinical information and history, including scans, x-rays, laboratory data, etc.
  • Describes gross anatomic features of surgical specimens
  • Determine appropriate sections and prepares tissues for histological processing
  • Obtains biological samples such as blood, tissue and toxicological material for studies such as flow cytometry, image analysis, immunohistochemistry,etc.
  • Determine appropriate sections and performs special procedures including faxitron imaging and tumor triage
  • Determine appropriate sections and prepares and submits appropriate tissue sections for light microscopy (routine processing)
  • Determine appropriate sections and prepares and submits appropriate tissue sections for special procedures such as frozen section, electron microscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy
  • Maintains clean, well-organized, and properly stocked work areas.
  • Photographs appropriate gross specimens and microscopic slides
  • Performs duties relating to the administrative maintenance of surgical pathology protocols, reports and data, including the filing of reports, protocols, photographic data or slides, microscopic slides assisting in the completion of specimen coding and billing.
  • Assures proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies and cleanliness of the anatomic pathology department.
  • Assists in the organization and coordination of anatomic pathology conferences
  • Performs job function in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge of departmental updates and Policies & Procedures.
  • Accommodates changes in workload within the department
  • During light workload situations, uses time to departmental advantage by performing additional tasks/duties for the department.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in accepting schedule and work assignments.
  • Keeps Lead or lead appropriately informed when problems or unusual situations arise.
  • Exercises authority when appropriate, recognizing needs and directing activities to department advantage.
  • Participates in efforts to improve the department through participation in QI activities.
  • Demonstrates problem solving initiative and problem solving skills which include appropriate activities, follow up and documentation.
  • Participates in the training of new employees, and offers guidance, assistance and direction to less experienced personnel.
  • Responds in a positive manner when discussing errors and offers suggestions for error prevention.
  • Adapts to changes or unusual circumstances to promote cooperation and minimize disruption to working environment.
  • Responds in a calm and professional manner to inquiries and complaints.
  • Clinical Care: Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements:

  • Masters degree in a health science field with background in biology and a minimum of one year experience in pathology.
  • Must fulfill all CAP requirements for grossing tissue specimens Certified by the American Society for
  • Clinical Pathology as a Pathologist Assistant PA (ASCP) within 12 months of hire
  • Pathology grossing experience under the supervision of pathologists and/or anther Pathologist assistant for one year.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions, knowledge of section specific test information and instrumentation may be required.

 

Job Preferences:

  • Previous experience as a PA.
  • Completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) program for Pathologist Assistant, certification by ASCP.
