Job Description

The Clinical Nurse Manager, is a member of the Neurosciences Institute and Chemical Dependency, Aspire, and Solmar (Addiction Treatment Center or ATC) team, working in close collaboration with the Director and Medical Director in providing leadership, management and oversight of nursing and clinical services for the ATC, Hoag and its associates. The Nurse Manager is responsible for operational oversight of all nursing aspects of the ATC. The Clinical Nurse Manager is responsible for defining, directing, organizing and supervising the work of the nursing staff.  Primary duties include operational development and continuous quality improvement of all nursing responsibilities and processes. The emphasis of the role is management of nursing, and the scope of responsibility includes the overall needs of a comprehensive multi-disciplinary program with many integrated clinical services and a varied customer base; the scope includes: departmental goal-setting and program development, work flow/process development, staff productivity, operational efficiency, clinical effectiveness, and regulatory compliance using continuous process improvement as the framework for these and all other activities. The Nurse Manager evaluates the performance of staff nurses, providing feedback and mentoring, professional development, disciplinary intervention, and hiring of nurses and nursing support roles (eg, PCAs). Assists in the management of departmental budget, with specific responsibility for nurse staffing and inpatient inventory, equipment and supplies, as well as overseeing general facility needs are maintained. The Clinical Nurse Manager works collaboratively with all members of the Addiction Treatment Center management team to provide cohesive and coordinated leadership of the program toward the organizational mission and vision and evolving program goals.  The Clinical Nurse Manager serves as a representative of the department, the organization, and promotes the best interest of staff, the patients and families they care for, and all ATC customers.


Essential Functions:

  • Assisting the Director and Medical Director, provides strategic direction, vision and leadership to the ATC.
  • Executes efficiently and effectively on job responsibilities toward vision and goals.
  • Provides proactive and highly engaged leadership toward vision and goals, and in compliance with policies and procedures, in support of departmental budget, initiating new patient care programs and pathways and managing day-to-day operations of the program.
  • Responsible, in partnership with other departmental clinical managers and Directors, for all aspects of the Value Triple Aim as articulated through evolving departmental goals.
  • Drives department quality improvement processes for financial performance, clinical quality and satisfaction of patients, staff and all department customer groups.
  • Collaborate with the Director, Medical Director, Clinical Manager and interdisciplinary teams in order to develop, implement and evaluate programs and services.
  • Represents the ATC across multiple channels both inside and outside of the Organization.
  • Champions and affects change as necessary in areas such as, but not limited to, patient experience and satisfaction, staff satisfaction, clinical outcomes, business development and cost reduction measures.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of department and hospital standards, policies and procedures.
  • Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct.
  • Maintains a high degree of interpersonal skills.
  • The Nurse Manager maintains the Standards of Nursing Practice defined by the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Responsible for daily nursing coverage and assures competencies are matched to assignments.
  • Responsible for daily review of the schedule and patient flow.
  • Manages, as direct reports, staff RNs, PCA/Clerical Coordinators, and Utilization Review RNs.
  • Responsible for daily productivity management.
  • Responsible for nurse and nursing support staff development from the time of hire to meet the needs of the patients, the dept and the organization.  Collaborates with the Directors, Charge Nurses, Educators, and physicians to assess and meet these goals.
  • Clinical Care: Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Education, Training and Experience


Required:       Current Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California. 2 Years-Experience in hospital-based nursing in Chemical Dependency treatment. Minimum of a Bachelor’s of Nursing (BSN).


Preferred:       5 Years-Experience in hospital-based nursing in Chemical Dependency Treatment; Masters of Nursing (MSN).


Skills or Other Qualifications


Required:       Current BLS, ACLS. Strong clinical assessment and problem solving skills.

Ability to represent the organization in various internal and external projects and initiatives. Demonstrates knowledge of current nursing theory and commitment to professional practice. Knowledge of management concepts. Interpersonal and problem solving skills to interact with patients, families, staff, physicians, physician offices and co-workers.


Preferred:       Minimum, five years of experience (2-3 years of which includes experience with managing daily operations and budgets) in previously held positions in CDRC.
