Job Description

The perfusionist operates extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment under the direct supervision of a surgeon or physician in the cardiac operating room or in other hospital locations.   The perfusionist ensures the safe management of physiologic functions by monitoring and analyzing the necessary clinical variables including but not limited to:  blood gas and blood chemistry, anticoagulation and hemostasis, thermal regulation, and other physiological indicators.  Under a direct order or as prescribed by a licensed physician, a perfusionist may induce hypothermia/hyperthermia, conduct hemodilution, concentration or filtration, administer medications or blood products.  A perfusionist is part of the CVOR team and works collaboratively to meet patient needs in the perioperative environment. Provides direct patient care as defined by regulatory agencies. Acts as a patient advocate in all ethical and legal aspects.


Collaborates with the Medical and Administrative Directors in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating departmental goals, objectives, new programs, services and strategic plans.  Plans, implements and evaluates departmental development and training needs.  Expands scientific base by initiating review or literature, disseminating recent innovations and research findings relevant to specialty and patient outcomes.


Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct. Supports the mission of Hoag Hospital and the Heart and Vascular Institute. Provides on-call responsibilities weekdays, holidays and weekends.  Performs other duties as assigned.



Essential Functions

Clinical Practice

Under direct order from a licensed physician and in accordance with standardized procedures, performs extracorporeal support for adult patients with congenital or acquired cardiovascular orders.   Duties include:  monitoring, interpretation and intervention.  Demonstrates competent knowledge, based on hospital policies, procedures and standards in the care of the patients with cardiovascular disorders.


  • Performs functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement or supplementation of cardiovascular system, circulatory system with or without the oxygenation circuit, or any combination of those activities described in the Department of Consumer Affairs, Medical Board of California Chapter 5.67 Section 2590 (b) 1 through 3 inclusive.
    • Heart-lung machine
    • Counterpulsation
    • Ventricular assistance
    • Blood conversation techniques
    • Myocardial and organ preservation
    • Extracorporeal life support
  • Administers pharmacological and therapeutic agents, blood products, or anesthetic agents through the extracorporeal circuit or through an intravenous line as ordered by a physician or surgeon. Section 2590 (c) 1
  • Performs blood chemistry analysis physiologic monitoring. Section 2590 (c) (2) (3)

  • Recognizes and evaluates signs and symptoms and determine if signs and symptoms exhibit abnormal characteristics.  Section 2590 (c) (4)
  • Implements changes based on observed abnormalities after reporting and pursuant to an order by a physician or by using an approved standardized protocol. Section 2590 (c) (5)
  • Correctly collects, handles, labels and transports specimens using Standard Precautions and documents in the medical record.
    • Completes annual Point of Care certification.
  • Adheres to Infection Prevention policies and procedures and specific isolation precautions for the prevention and spread of blood-born pathogens and other communicable diseases.
  • Actively participates with the CVOR team to facilitate patient/procedure flow.
    • Ensures and prepares equipment and specialty items for each surgical procedure.
    • Assists with supply management by ordering, receiving and storing supplies.
  • Decontaminates and cleans perfusion related equipment per manufacturer guidelines and in compliance Chapter 3 Section 1200.   Documents in appropriate location.
    • Heart Lung Machine(s)
    • Cell Saver equipment
    • Heater-cooler unit(s)
  • Participates in Time Out protocol.
  • Documents care in the medical record and ensures that appropriate signatures are obtained prior to the patient leaving the CVOR.
    • Completes perfusion pre-procedure check list
    • Completes perfusion record
  • Enters perfusion/intraoperative specific data points into the STS database.
  • Assists or directs the development of perfusion specific policies and procedures.
  • Responds to emergency situations in a timeframe appropriate to the needs of the patient.
  • Ability to respond to on-call requirements within 30 minutes.
  • Must be willing to travel between different locations based on patient need.


Education, Training and Experience


Required:  Completion and graduation from a CAAHEP accredited school of cardiovascular perfusion. Section 2592 (a) (b)   Five to 10 years of experience performing at least 40 perfusion cases per year.


Preferred:  Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate discipline.  Current CA RN license.                     


Skills or Other Qualifications


Required:  Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions, knowledge of age of population served, and additional skills and knowledge of equipment may be required for hire into some patient care departments.


License and Certifications


Required: Certification or certification-eligible by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.  Certification must be achieved within 12 months of start date.  Section 2591 (a) (b)  Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required by start date.
