Job Description

This is an R&D chemical technician internship in HP's imaging and printing business. The work could be in a variety of areas, either focused on formulation of new colorants, inks, ink components, and media coatings that provide industry-leading performance for HP's inkjet products or performing analysis of materials and components utilizing standard analytical laboratory instrumentation for R&D, product development and manufacturing activities. You could also be responsible to develop, implement and troubleshoot chemicals, materials and processes for the development of new digital printing technology.

You will work with partners to solve formulation and analytical requests and communicate results accordingly. You will be trained to ensure adherence to good laboratory practices and will learn about topics such as laboratory safety, instrument operation and calibration, instrument maintenance, instrument troubleshooting and problem solving, method development, laboratory documentation, and quality system support.


* Must have 3.0 GPA and be one year from graduating with a discipline in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Engineering, or other natural science
* Internship typically starts mid-June and lasts through mid-September
* Interns are considered regular HP employees
* Work schedule typically 8-hour day 5 days/week
* Interns are assigned a mentor and focus on learning general position overview as well as participate in daily activities of mentor
* Interns are usually assigned a specific project that they own
* Interns participate in weekly one on one with manager/mentor to discuss progress against learning objectives
* Interns to do a comprehensive presentation to management and technical staff at end of rotation
* Potential for full time employment upon graduation of degree program


Students typically working towards a first level university degree in natural sciences or engineering

Possess a thorough theoretical knowledge of chemical concepts and principles acquired through education; possibly prior work experience or on-the-job training

Candidates having education or job experience in the following areas are of particular interest: Formulation, analytical instrument operation and maintenance (ICP/MS, GC/MS, LC/MS, etc), pigment chemistry, wet bench chemistry, printing.
