POSITION SUMMARY:

A pharmacist-intern may perform any duty of a pharmacist provided he or she is under the direct supervision of a pharmacist licensed by the board and approved as a preceptor by the board. A pharmacist-intern may not:

Present or identify himself/herself as a pharmacist.

Sign or initial any document which is required to be signed or initialed by a pharmacist unless a preceptor cosigns the document.

Supervise supportive personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Provides drug products by determining the appropriateness of prescription drug orders and medication orders; evaluating and selecting products; and assuring the accuracy of the product/prescription dispensing process.

Communicates with patients and/or their care givers about prescription drugs by interviewing and counseling patients, and/or their care givers, on drug usage, dosage, packaging, and storage; discussing drug cautions, side effects and patient conditions; explaining policies on fees and services; relating to patients in a professional manner; and interacting to confirm patient understanding.

Communicates with patients and/or their care givers about nonprescription products, devices, and diagnostic aids by interviewing and counseling patients and/or their caregivers on conditions and intended drug use; assisting in and recommending drug selection; referring patients to other health professionals; providing information on medical/surgical and home health-care devices and home diagnostic products; and providing poison control treatment information and referral.

Communicates with health professionals and the public in obtaining and providing accurate and concise information in a professional manner and using appropriate oral, written and nonverbal language.

Collaborates with physicians, other health-care professionals, patients and/or their caregivers to develop a therapeutic plan which will include monitoring and evaluating drug therapy. The pharmacist-intern can establish and interpret databases, identify drug-related problems and recommend appropriate pharmacotherapy specific to patient needs and devise follow-up plans.

Maintains professional-ethical standards by complying with laws and regulations pertaining to pharmacy practice, applying good professional judgment; exhibit reliability and credibility in dealing with others, deal professionally and ethically with colleagues and patients, demonstrate sensitivity and empathy for patients/care givers, and maintain confidentiality

Compound medications by selecting appropriate equipment and containers, and appropriately preparing compounded dosage forms, and documenting calculations and procedures.

Retrieve and evaluate drug information by selecting the best available resources for answering a drug-related request in a timely fashion and interpreting the information obtained and judging its relevance.

Manage general pharmacy operations by understanding departmental planning and policy making in relation to drug security, storage and control procedures, and maintaining quality assurance.

Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:

Is enrolled in the professional sequence of a college of pharmacy whose professional degree program has been accredited by ACPE

Has completed 30 credit hours of work towards a professional degree in pharmacy.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

Application to the Texas State Board of Pharmacy to by a Pharmacist Intern

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED:

One-year experience as a hospital pharmacist is preferred but not required.
