Our North Charleston, South Carolina office is seeking an early career Structural Engineer. The Structural Engineer II is responsible for interpreting, organizing, and executing engineering assignments. This involves exploration of structural engineering requirements, definition of scope, selection of problems for investigations, and development of concepts and approaches. This role is expected to act with occasional direction on technical matters pertaining to their field. This role is expected to support business development with the preparation of the structural engineering component of proposals and interviews.

The Structural Engineer primarily works with project staff within constraints of project scope, schedule, and budgets. Supervision received is essentially administrative, with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits. This role does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, plan, and design structural solutions for a wide range of industrial facilities, often with rigorous client requirements that exceed typical code minimums.
  • Interpret client objectives, project scope, budget and schedule as defined by project leadership.
  • Coordinate with engineers, designers, architects and project staff to reach agreement about designs that fit with operational, construction and aesthetic requirements.
  • Advise on and design measures to improve structural integrity and seismic strength of existing facilities.
  • Communicate the design of a structure and structural components through drawings, specifications, and computer models to develop detail drawings and construction documents.

Essential Job Functions

  • Define, organize, execute, and coordinate structural engineering assignments.
  • Plan, organize, and oversee the work of engineers, designers and administrative staff supporting those assignments.
  • Serve as technical resource on design issues and engineering theories, concepts, principles, and processes.
  • Conduct detail calculations of loads, pressures, stresses and strains of structural components, as well as information that supports the design basis.
  • Guide the investigations of structural problems.  Plan and develop solutions to those problems, that often require novel concepts and approaches within a multi-discipline team.
  • Interface with key client and project staff in formal, informal and project team meetings.
  • Research, design, and specify structural materials, components, and systems.
  • Provide clients with assistance during bid and construction phase for related systems.
  • Coordination of design with vendor supplied equipment.
  • Preparation of construction bid packages and construction specifications.
  • Assist in preparation and presentation of proposals, including scope of services and fee estimate.  Support business development activities and proposal input.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to an off-site location and/or accept client site assignments when required.
  • Estimate and manage effort required by others to accomplish structural work within project schedule.
  • Coordinate the design process with the project schedule to ensure timely delivery of the design documents.
  • Ability to pass Client badging and screening processes.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Leadership skills with the ability to work directly with existing and prospective clients, vendors, and constructors.
  • Advanced structural engineering knowledge.
  • Ability to apply structural engineering techniques commonly used in industrial capital projects.
  • Ability to identify, interpret and apply relevant codes and standards to engineering designs.
  • Experience with use of the AISC, ACI, IBC, and other model codes (past and present), ASCE 7 and AISC Seismic provisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to use computer software programs related to engineering, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Structural design and analysis software experience using STAAD, Enercalc, FEA and similar.
  •  AutoCAD and Revit proficiency preferred.
  • Understand set budgets and deadlines for discipline tasks.


Educational & Work Experience

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • ABET accredited Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification required
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) preferred

Work is performed mostly in office settings. Some outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites or public works facilities. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate drafting instruments, computers and various pieces of office equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and smell.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Travel can be required.
