Job Description

Editorial Intern

Hanley Wood, the premier information, media, and marketing services company serving the residential, commercial design, and construction industry, is seeking an ambitious and detail-oriented editorial intern interested in architecture, building, and construction journalism. This intern would contribute to all of Hanley Wood's publications-including ARCHITECT, Builder, Remodeling, JLC (Journal of Light Construction), Concrete Construction, and more-and would be based at the company's Washington, D.C., headquarters.

Hanley Wood's interns have a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the media and publishing world in a fun and collegial environment. This position requires 30-40 hours per week for 10 months, and pays $15.00/hour. Specific schedules are flexible within our core business hours (8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.).

The Editorial Intern should possess exceptional reporting, writing, and editing skills along with an innate curiosity about a wide breadth of topics, including and preferably in the building sector and in the fields of technology and materials science. Meticulous attention to detail and factual accuracy is crucial.

Responsibilities will include:

* Reporting and writing brief articles (200-500 words) on newsworthy stories and events related to architecture, construction, and building technology
* Fact-checking stories for the print magazines and some online stories
* Researching online to identify interesting story ideas relevant to Hanley Wood brands
* Writing intelligent, creative, and cogent copy that drives traffic to Hanley Wood websites
* Promoting content on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr)
* Managing day-to-day community management, audience engagement, page and content moderation, and general outreach
* Conducting research and interviews with building and design experts by telephone and in person
* Attending regular story and art meetings
* Potential travel to events in the D.C. region for news coverage

Preferred skills, education, and experience:

* Bachelor's degree in Journalism or English; alternatively, a degree in a field within the building sector, such as architecture, engineering, or construction management, accompanied by significant writing experience. Recent college graduates preferred; college seniors will also be considered.
* Ability to multitask and manage long-term projects and daily news stories simultaneously without extensive supervision-we prefer not to be micromanagers here.
* Demonstrated research, writing, interviewing, and people skills
* Ability to work and collaborate with a team
* Ability to adhere to deadlines and tasks
* Interest in or desire to broaden knowledge of the architecture, building, and construction sectors
* Knowledge of digital content management systems and AP Style a plus
* Must possess the maturity required to work in a casual, but professional, office setting
* Must be able to work in Hanley Wood's Washington, D.C., office; i.e., no teleworking
