About Gwynedd Square Center

At Gwynedd Square Nursing Center, our Alzheimer's Special Care Program is designed to insure the well being and security of people with Alzheimer's and to maximize their remaining capabilities. Our specially trained staff is sensitive to the needs of our Alzheimer's residents and respond with a compassionate and enriching program of care and support. Our multidisciplinary program aims to encourage the self-esteem, dignity and independence of people with Alzheimer's. Care is given in a dignified and compassionate way that supports and nurtures, rather than demeans, the Alzheimer's resident. The components of our Alzheimer's Special Care Program are: * a specially designed physical environment * therapeutically designed activities programs and awareness and motivation groups * special dining programs and dining rooms designed to promote well being at each stage of the disease * a staff of professionals, specially trained in caring for residents with Alzheimer's, providing the highest quality assistance and care with activities of daily living A Specially Designed Physical Environment Other facilities have what they refer to as an Alzheimer's "Wing" or "Unit". These units are locked units where Alzheimer's residents are kept apart from other nursing home residents. Such segregated units are often necessary because the design of the facility is multi-story, where elevators and stairwells present particular hazards and sources of extreme agitation for Alzheimer's residents. While locking Alzheimer's residents in segregated units may be the only alternative in a building not designed with Alzheimer's residents in mind, we at Gwynedd Square do not believe that is the most beneficial or therapeutic approach. At Gwynedd Square, Alzheimer's residents are a part of the whole Gwynedd community. By encouraging Alzheimer's residents to join in and participate in the entire community, we seek to promote their sense of dignity and to maximize their remaining cognitive abilities. The environment at Gwynedd Square is specifically designed for people with Alzheimer's. Everything is on one floor. There are no dangerous elevators or stairwells. Our circular design surrounding two beautifully landscaped gardens allows residents to walk and wander freely and continuously. Even the largest segregated units do not provide the over 1500 lineal feet of walking path that we have at Gwynedd Square. A confused resident can wander for hours in a safe, secure and supervised environment. This is ideal for most residents with Alzheimer's. Our gardens are wonderful places where residents can enjoy the sunshine, feed baby ducks around our ponds, and enjoy a rainbow of colorful flowers. Our state of the art door alarm and bracelet-activated automatic door locking system helps in preventing confused residents from wandering away from the facility unescorted.
