Job Summary

The RN First Assistant (RNFA) performs in an expanded perioperative nursing role as a collaborative member of the surgical team. The RNFA participates in the surgical procedure in the capacity of surgical assistant in collaboration with and at the direction of the surgeon being assisted. The RNFA provides individualized care for the patient undergoing surgical intervention through implementation of the nursing process. All perioperative nurses are responsible for preoperative assessment and postoperative evaluation, but the diversity of nursing role functions occurs primarily during the intraoperative phase. Interdependent intraoperative nursing behaviors appropriate for, and unique to, the RNFA and performed at the direction of a surgeon include: 1) tissue handling 2) providing exposure 3) using instrumentation 4) providing hemostasis and 5) suturing. Performance of the duties of the RNFA is within the role and scope of responsibilities of the RN as stated by The Board of Nursing for South Carolina in Advisory Opinions- Question 14 (see attached). Question 14 references the 1998 Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Official Statement on Registered Nurse First Assistant. A copy of this statement (revised in 2004) is also attached.

The RNFA applies knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative technique relative to the operative procedures and skillfully applies principles of asepsis and infection control.
