Job Description

Grand Canyon University is currently seeking a DevOps (Systems Automation) Engineer. The DevOps Engineer is a service oriented team member responsible for delivering solutions as required with a focus on automation, innovation and support for our 24x7x365 high-availability University. The DevOps Engineer is versatile and will share in the responsibilities for supporting the efficient provisioning, installation and configuration, daily operations, and maintenance of all systems hardware and application software within the IT infrastructure. This position will be working closely with application developers to handle rapid platform deployments and will also assist in ensuring that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to industry best practices, compliance and GCU business objectives.

Responsibilities:

Researches and recommends innovative, automated solutions with the thought process of a DevOps culture and solutions in mind.

Finds opportunities for streamlining processes through the use of technology to improve time-to-market of services.

Leads focused activities to migrate to higher availability and efficiency for GCU critical environments.

Assists with managing the architecting and engineering of solutions for various project and operational needs.

Assists with creating and maintaining best practices and procedures for the installation of new / rebuild of existing servers and configuration of hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.

Assists with developing and streamlining automated installation and configuration procedures using tools such as SCOM, Puppet and Chef, as well as scripts, templates and gold images.

Contributes to and maintains system standards.

Adheres to best practices and procedures for the team on daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.

Serves as an escalation point for investigation and troubleshooting of production issues.

Assists with the repair and recovery from hardware or software failures.

Adheres with operational, configuration, or other procedures.

Adheres to periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.

Monitors and performs ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimizations as required which include: establishing procedures and best practices for configuration of CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.

Finds ways to automate and report metrics and analytics on the health of the technologies.

Provides after hours on-call support.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a related discipline (computer science, information technology, etc.) from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent work experience, with a technical major, such as engineering or computer science.

10+ years of relevant technical experience in a large, enterprise environment.

An equivalent combination of directly-related work experience and education may be substituted.

Technical certifications are a plus.

Strong technical understanding of enterprise computing solutions including: DevOps, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS models and architectural design and oversight.

Strong scripting experience using .Net, Ruby, Perl, PowerShell and other coding languages required to successfully create automation processes via service APIs.

Solid understanding of systems architecture from the application through the server stack.

Proven experience in creating successful designs, development and implementation of high availability systems, applications and related products.

In-depth technical knowledge of current infrastructure protocols, business platforms, middleware, internet standards, and database software.

Familiarity with agile project management techniques including Scrum and Lean processes for organizing, time management and meeting deadlines.

Excellent problem solving and decision making skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills to facilitate delivery of IT solutions for business needs.
